Signs of a False Dream

Sometimes a dream is beyond the mere machination of the mind. Some dreams originate from positive sources, e.g. the Kingdom of God. Other dreams originate from negative sources.

Dreams from negative sources intend to lead you astray. Such dreams will disinform, delude and delay you. These dreams do not aid you in any permanent way. Even when true or helpful information is rendered, it is rendered to gain trust. Trust allows a later deception to be received which might otherwise have produced only laughter from you.

Here are some indicators of false dreams:

1. Promise of greatness or rich reward. "If you will do X, you will receive Y." Or the dream simply shows you as a great person.

2. People in the dream present as people you know. But, close inspection, or even any inspection at all, reveals they are not who they present to be.

3. There is a threat of negative outcome causally related to an action which you are being told to undertake. Example: "If you do not do this, then (your loved one) will die. It will be YOUR fault!"

4. The sequence of images flows in a herky-jerky way. Fluidity is compromised. As a scene in a movie, it would be considered strange or poorly directed.

5. Scenes of nudity far beyond normal expectation. Examples: orgies, nude beaches, shower scenes.

6. You are in a place you would not normally choose to be. If you are a moral, shy person, you should seriously doubt a dream in which you are at a strip club. Question a dream which transpires in an environment you would never visit.

7. The "guide" possesses negative personality traits: Some dreams are presented to you. You are taken to a place to view events. Or, a scene is played out on a type of screen before you. Often, the events are interpreted or explained to you. You may have questions answered. If you are able to see this guide, what does he look like?

The common stereotypes we have of dream guides as positive or negative are very accurate, in my experience. They either have positive characteristics and convey peace, or they are pushy, generally negative and fear and/ or distrust may be experienced by you. Watch for the "guide". Does his voice reassure you? Does he cause you concern or doubt?

Or the dream simply shows you as a great person.

I agree and think one of the most important things to consider in identifying a false dream is how the dream made the dreamer feel, and has the dream changed the dreamers behavior in anyway that furthers God's will?. Does the dreamer feel important? Is the focus of the dream on the dreamer? Or, does the dreamer feel humbled, in awe of the vision?

For example, a dream / vision of being seated in heaven with God, and Christ who looks at you and smiles. (I read something like this in a thread, but can't find it.) The post did not say how the dreamer felt.

For example, did she feel excited and important, like "Wow, I'm in heaven, Jesus smiled at me, cool!" Or did she feel humbled, in awe, or even scared of the awesome power of the presence of the Lord? How has it changed her behavior? Are her resulting actions filled with pride or humble service to God's will? Like, she now goes to church every Sunday and says this as evidence of her faithfulness. Or, she goes to church more or less often, but she now reflects deeply on the scriptures and sermons without concern for demonstrating her faithfulness.
