• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I am an older person now and have been smoking since the age of 16. My health is suffering due to smoking and I cannot seem to find the will to be healthy in order to stop. Inside me I just think well if I go I go. I have tried everything and smoke around 20 roll ups a day. I have asthma COPD, vascular issues and get panic attack due to not breathing properly when walking, so it has stopped me from wanting to go to the shops even. I belong to a nicotine anonymous group, use patches daily. I have tried electronic cigarettes too but I feel there is something deep inside me that just rebels against my own health. Can anyone pray for me or help me? I have had an balloon put in my leg due to blocked veins through smoking but still nothing makes me want to quit.

It is clear that you want to quit; else you would not have started this thread. Try gum not even nicotine gum just gum. This will give you something to have in your mouth. I have never smoked, so other than that I am not much help.

What do you experience if you try to quit? I think for some it helps to analyze what smoking is 'doing for them' in essence, that makes it hard to quit.

Like for me every time I fall back into smoking, it's a nervous habit sort of thing. Can't sleep, restless, pacing, etc and the the sort of ritualistic pattern of it is the biggest thing, so those little dum-dum suckers are super helpful. Then my brain also associates the smell of smoke as soothing, so incense that smells good to me is also always helpful.

Then there are things I also have to avoid, like having a drink (alcohol) will always make me want to have a cigarette with it once I am buzzed.

What do you think you would miss about smoking when trying to quit?

Prayed. I don`t have the problem you do but it doesnt mean I am better than you are. I just felt it is not nicotine you really need, you need Jesus. That something deep inside of you need Jesus. People like to try to find this or that to feed their needs but what they really need is Jesus. Jesus Love you and adore you,in his eyes you are perfect, he does not count your fault. He cares every part of you, your mind, emotion, body. If he can do the miracles on the leprosy, disabled, dead, he can do it for you. You can talk anything to him, he is a counsler, a savior, a shield, anything you need is in him. I personally recommend you to go to a bible based church and join a bible study group. Life need to move forward.Dont feel you are lower than anybody else you just need help like anyone else. And dont be arrogant or depressed that nobody can help you .

Also make your life interesting is good for you. Joyce Meyer is a woman who had been abused by her father and smoked many years , she is a TV evanglist. You may watch her testmony online for recreation.

Sometimes it's hard to quit all at once, but cutting down is very worthwhile and sometimes more achievable.
