This thread is to explain how to set up a standard American keyboard to type in Hebrew with the standard Israeli keyboard layout. This is just for Windows XP, so if it's different for Macs or Vista, please feel free to post a tutorial for those operating systems.

If you don't have Hebrew support on your computer, pop in the XP installation disk and install it, then go to Control Panel> Regional and Language settings and click on the 'Languages' tab. Make sure "Install files for Complex and Right to Left languages" is checked, then click the 'Details' button. Next to the box at the bottom where you see EN (English) Keyboard . US, click 'Add'. Select Hebrew from the list and hit OK and Hebrew should now be under English. Select it and click the 'Key Settings' button at the bottom. In this window, you can set a key combination to use to switch between the languages (I have mine set on SHIFT+ALT.) Now, you can type in Hebrew! Below is a link to an image that shows the Israeli layout. To add nikudot (Vowel points) to letters, make sure Caps Lock is on, then type a letter normally, hit Shift and a number key, and it will add the accent under the letter (these are also on the image below). For a more detailed explanation of typing nikudot, see This page.

the above keymap is a pain in the butt. So for all those who would like to make life easy, I have a free bit of software (XP/Vista only - sorry) which maps the letters to the mainly phonetic sounds on the keyboard. If anyone wants it (its a small file) simply PM or email me. I used it to create my signature and its a doddle to use. simply ensure hebrew language (right/left) is installed choose the keyboard map and your away.

most letters are accessed using the relevant sound, closed and final letter forms are accessed using shift+letter, and vowel points, etc, are accessed with shift and ctrl, alt.

Steve

p.s. you can always download it from http://semeia.org/educational/BiblicalFonts_SBLHebrew.aspx

this link opens the pdf file and you can see how the keys are arranged in the keymap... http://www.sbl-site.org/Fonts/BiblicalHebrewSILManual.pdf

BlueMarkus, I'm glad to see that you're going to learn the Israeli layout. I don't understand those who would choose any other way. If you want to learn to type in Russian, learn the Russian keyboard. If you want to learn to type in Arabic, learn the Arabic keyboard. Don't invent new layouts that don't match what they actually do in the country where they use the languages!

I have the layout memorized for polytonic Greek, for Israeli Hebrew (plus vowels), for Arabic (Saudia Arabia) and for Spanish (Costa Rica -- the only Spanish-speaking country I've been to). It doesn't take too long to learn a keyboard layout. Kudos for going the right way.
