Secular music... what does it all mean?

Many so-called secular artists are Christians-

It seems some chirstian's are sooooooo tightly wound that they can't believe that Michelangelo, painted anything other than angels.

Music is the language of Love-we can all be moved by a sad song, a love songbut our reaction is our own. What a river is to me is not likely to be the same as it is to you.

Is Precious Memories a gospel or secular song? (it's your perception)

Of course just like anything else some can use the tool of music to convey anger or any other negative. Choose what you listen to, but music for me has been the best quick fix to uplift my spirit I've found!

What does God think? I don't know, but Willie Nelson & Waylon Jennings did a song called 2003 minus 25:

Welcome to 2003 minus 25
Oh say can you smell her for the smoke
God's still up there laughin' so he's gotta be alive
Who says he can't take a dirty joke

(Heard in an interview that this was a reference to pollution; but it's whatever YOU think)

I know that would be ground shaking for most christians to consider, but I don't think God has been surprised or shocked by any of em

Think of it this way, what do you want to put into your head, God, love, peace, or immorality, lust, drugs, depression, cruelty? Songs and their lyrics have a profound effect on people, and their thinking. Dirty songs are dirty. Most of the current 'pop' stuff has subliminal messages that ould shock you if you just read the lyrics.
Secular music is mostly fine, but that doesn't excuse listening to things that aren't in accordance with the word of God.

Your questions are too broad in scope. Which genre of secular music would you like to address? When people ask how does God feel about overly suggestive lyrics, I get nervous because it makes us the judge of God and what He would do. When you're in Heaven you can ask him that, if it still matters to you then. A lot of Christians think that when a secular band puts out a song, that it's that band's testimony about their personal life.

JMHO anything that uplifts my spirit, brings love, family, gratitude or is in accordance.

Fire Warms & Burns-it's a tool; how YOU choose to view/use/interperte it
has allot to do with accordance.

If you have a sound mind use it, if not the point it moot

Alright fine I take back what I said before, let me put it this way to try and answer your question. I listen to death and black metal (see avatar and signature lolz), most of which deals with death, the grave, damnation, dark emotions, psychological torture and insanity. I can relate to some of the more psychological lyrics, but majority of extreme lyrics have no effect on me. Majority of them are mostly for shock factor, anyways. But the ultra-blaphemous bands like Vital Remains and Deicide are off-limits to me, however. I know somebody'll mention that I like Morbid Angel, but there's a huge difference between Morbid Angel's lyrics and Vital Remains lyrics. You can look at the album artwork of Vital's latest album and you'll know what I'm talking about. Morbid Angel is nothing comparatively, like I said, shock factor. I know other Christian metalheads who listen to stuff like Gorgoroth, Watain and Marduk, three of the most blasphemous Scandinavian Black Metal bands. Why do then listen to it? No idea, it's their relationship with Christ and it's between them and The Lord, but as for me, I won't be listening to something that bad. Cannibal Corpse writes some of the most disgusting lyrics you'll ever read, but like I said, not only are they for shock factor, but they are simply horror entertainment. Cannibal Corpse has no message, it's just pure adrenaline-driven Texas Chainsaw Massacre slaughter. Of course I don't advocate that you go out and do these things, and neither does the band themselves, but it's just entertainment. I happen to love psychological thriller/horror movies, and the same laugh I as a horror fan would get from watching Jason Voorhees butcher some random bystander would be similar to that of a Cannibal Corpse song. Not only that, but Cannibal Corpse and even Jason/Freddy Kruger movies are way to ridiculously over the top to be taken seriously in the first place. If you look at those things and think that these things happen regularly or are normal to butcher people, then it's a fact that you had mental issues beforehand. It's simply entertainment, of course you shouldn't look for entertainment in what I like because that may not appeal to you. Some Christians would find horror movies offensive and pointless. I happen to really enjoy them, it all depends on the person. You really shouldn't look for this humongous life-changing message in music because that isn't the right thing to be looking to for that type of stuff. If you really want a life-changing ear shattering message then go read The Bible. There ya go. Obviously if something is negatively effecting your relationship with Christ, then you should stop partaking in such. But metal has helped me in a way that is so deep that I couldn't possibly cover it all in this one paragraph.

Wow. That one band you mentioned you said you don't listen to...Sick. I just looked up their stuff on Wikipedia. I regret that now.

I don't feel like listening to secular music is a sinful act. It just depends on what you make of the lyrics..Unless we're talking about something in the range of what the poster above said (that one band, Vital Remains or whatever) I listen to alot of funk music...and it was all about sex back in the 70s and 80s (when funk was good stuff) I just brush it off as 'oh, he could be talking about his wife' It's not going to make me run out and want to do things. Just dance like a crazy person.

Also. I was classmates with a nice Christian boy in HS. His favorite band was Cannibal Corpse. I never understood why. Not a metal head. But, more power to ya!

Regardless of my personal feelings, as far as taste goes, they always have amazing drummers.

Well, an interesting and an insomnia-challenging topic I think deserves some input, seeing sleep evades me tonight..

When driving, particularly to Switzerland, a long journey barrelling down the A26 via France, I listen to secular music on the radio, CDs and my iPod. It helps keep me company and providing it's chill and relaxing, helps me and my fast car along the way. Lyrics providing they are not offensive, go over my head. Sometimes I even sing along, and Fiona's dulcit tones never fails to bring a smile to my face. I love the oldies like Barbra Streisand.

We go to dances, my family and I and we dance together to secular music because it's fun. F.U.N. Being an ex-ballet dancer (bad back prevented a great career) I dance pretty well; I let the music take me but I don't allow to control me. My love for classical will never fade, either. Secular music providing it's not too heavy, crashy and ear-jangling means bliss after a long day. I see no wrong with it, but that's only a personal viewpoint.

One such track hits the spot, every time: Arabic chillout music. It's because I'm an experienced paraglider that this so reminds me of the hobby which sadly I don't have much time to enjoy these days: Buddha Bar. Not everybody's taste I realise, but my being a believer in Christ has not compromised me from listening to such.

By the way, what is your magnificent font colour called?
