  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Refering to the OP linked in this thread, I really dont get his point, in what way does that video represent "scientists catching up"?

As for the video itself, I found it interesting and fun but nothing really that ground breaking.

Because if you skip to the end, they mention mitochondrial Eve, and Y-chromosomal Adam.

Yeah I saw that, it's inevitable that all X and Y chromosomes seen in a population would be seen to come from a common ancestor. mt eve and y adam have nothing to do with biblical adam and eve, the two individuals were not contemporaries, they were not the first male/female and the individual labled as adam and eve will change as the mix of haplotypes in the world population change over time.

So, do you get tired of typing "mitochondrial Eve" and "Y-chromosomal Adam" each time? I see Temperate is already shortening it. We need a good abbreviation.

mitochondrial Eve -> M-Eve -> Mave

Y-chromosomal Adam -> Chrome Adam -> Chrome Man -> Conan

Ooh. I like that. Mave and Conan, sittin' in a tree ...

Sorry, but it is Friday. Back to the discussion.

After 4 minutes in, the stunning revelation that humans emulate other humans.

After 6 minutes, the question of whether we can become empathic towards all humanity, to other animals, etc. The answer? We're already there.

At 7:05, some comedy anti-semetic doodles.

At 7:30, something odd about how England and France didn't exist prior to the industrial revolution.

At 8:44, we got to the be reveal. According to the utilitarianists, we shouldn't feel empathy towards our fellow man (as we did during, say, the Haiti earthquake).

At 9:32, he says the Bible got it right that we all came from two people. Well, no, the Bible got that one wrong: the most recent ancestor for all women lived in East Africa about 200,000 years ago, while the most recent ancestor for all men lived in Africa about 50,000 years ago. So, these most common ancestors were about 150,000 years out of sync, and are this inconsistent with the Biblical account of all humans coming from just two ancestors. This 'Adam' and 'Eve' were not the first humans, nor are they the only ancestors of humanity.

In summary: a rather pointless ramble on why we should be empathic towards our fellow man, which completely misses the point that we are empathic towards our fellow man, as evidenced by the Haiti earthquake which the video cites.

Moreover, what does this have to do with science 'finally catching up'?

I suppose that science might be "cathing up" with folk psychology insofar as things like empathy are finally being understood (although tentativley) using a purely naturalistic model and methodology. We have known about empathy for millenia, but not known much about it from a scientific perspective until recently.

Actually the guy in video said some nonsense, like that babies will cry because other babies cry. Actually babies will cry when they hear any loud noise, including other babies crying.
I was a weird baby, then. I used to sleep to heavy metal.

Oh no, you don't mean that someone misunderstood mt-Eve and Y-Adam again?

Sometimes too well

Huh? Then what were those kingdoms that spent most of the Middle Ages throwing knights and longbowmen at each other?

Quibble alert! These are the most recent maternal and paternal line ancestors. The MRCA of all men/women over all lines of descent is almost guaranteed to be a different person.

Thanks for the summary. I almost watched it, and I'm glad you stopped me

It was all just a Monty Python sketch!

Gah, you're right, curse you

I did it so that no one else would have to watch it. My eyes, they burn

I said loud noise.
As a teenager in the '80's, going to sleep to the sounds of Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, etc, I can attest to the soothing sounds of (pre-modern) Metallica and other metal bands being a soothing sound to go to sleep to.
To this day, when I suffer from insomnia (pretty common for me), I'll load my mp3 player with the soothing sounds of pre-90's metallica, some Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, etc etc etc.

My son (now 11 years old) also fell asleep to the same music during his first year (worked WONDERS during his colic nights)
