  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Thanks for sending me a message. I ran a 5K over the weekend and did pretty well. I am not fast but I do the best I can. I feel good about it for being able to finish and do the best I can. I don't worry about competing with the other runners. I also have a goal of seeing how far I can run. I was going to enter a marathon a couple months ago but I read that if you did not finish in a certain time that they "would pick you and give you a ride" after the allotted time was over. I did not know how long it would take me to do my first marathon and would really be embarrassed about having to be picked up and transported to the finish line, so I decided to run the half marathon. After running it I realized I could have run the full marathon without any trouble. Now I am signed up for a marathon taking place on 12/15. If I do OK then I plan to run a longer race after that. They have races that go all the way up to 100 miles here in Oklahoma.
I wish the long races did not cost so much because I cannot afford to run them very often. I run about 1 or 2 5Ks a month.
No one I know cares about running. There are a couple guys at the gym that are not runners and they encourage me and seem interested but besides that there is no one. I talk to my wife about running and she tries to pretend to be interested to a small degree. I attend the races without knowing anyone there. Of course they are friendly and occasionally strike up brief conversations with me.
Anyway, I don't know if the things I told you make any sense but it is nice to talk to someone who loves to run. Thank you for listening.

I would be glad to talk to you about running. I've done a 5k and 10k over the last year or so. I'm thinking about trying a half marathon and will start training for that after I graduate from school at the end of this month
pm me if you want

I did a 5K over the weekend and enjoyed it. The people there were nice and it was organized well. People there were cheering me on every few blocks. Also, it was the fastest I ever ran in a 5K and that felt good. I have been running for over a year now and am improving little by little. This race was for a Christian school and I like helping raise money for cause of Christ. That's an added bonus for me.
Thanks for offering to talk to me about running. Ever since I got out of high school I have been looking for a sport to be involved in because I missed being in sports like I was in high school. I like being in shape. Running races helps give me motivation to work out and stay in shape. It also gives me a sense of accomplishment to improve my time in 5Ks or be able to run in longer races. I am just beginning to enter the longer races and am excited about it. I did a half marathon about 2 months ago and completed it so my next step up will be a marathon on 12/15. Of course I will take it easy with a nice slow pace for that race to make sure I finish it OK. I feel like I am developing a more smooth energy efficient pace and I like it. I am learning to relax more and don't have a sense of urgency about speed or keeping up with the other runners. When I do this I don't wear myself out the first part of the race and actually start feeling better with more energy the latter part of the race. My breathing is more relaxed now. I am slowly learning more about running. I still have much to learn.
I wish you well on your running experience.

Yes, energy efficient pace is the key, and pacing yourself. It's always fun to know that you're finishing strongly. You'll actually find that your pace will stay the same whether you're going faster or slower, what changes is the length of your stride. One of the key things is not over-striding, that is, not letting your foot land a little in front of your body. Your shoulder and hips and ankle should all be in a straight line as seen from the side of your body, your foot should be landing underneath you. Peace

Thanks for the information. I will try to apply it. I don't think that I over-stride. However, lately during 5Ks I have been taking longer strides going up and down hills and it improves my overall time. I lean forward going up hills and actually run faster than usual. It seems to work. However, I don't think I should try speeding up during the marathon 12/15. My goal is to just finish it. The marathon I signed up for is called a half and half marathon because half of it is on the road and half of it is on a trail that is on a mountainside. There will be frequent significant inclines in the trail portion of the race. I am not sure how to best manage the trail part because I don't know much about trail runs. I have a hill in front of my house. I was thinking of running up and down it in addition to my regular workout. My regular workout consists of 2 1/2 hours of hard work at the gym 3x weekly. I mostly work on leg exercises for both strength and endurance.
I appreciate your sharing your insights with me. I find them helpful.

Actually it's better if you try to stay upright when running up a hill. You actually have more power in your legs with your pelvis being forward rather than your shoulders. Taking long strides on the downhill is of course faster, but I actually think shorter strides is better going uphill. You can more easily go uphill the faster you go, maybe that's what you're doing with longer strides.

Thanks again for the info on running. Seems the more I learn the more I realize how much I don't know. I will take short strides going uphill from now on. Maybe I should get a good book on running.
I have talked about some of my running experiences but have not heard much about anyone else's experiences. I would like to hear what other people are doing.
