  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

i guess i'm going to need to go read the early Church Fathers..
but now i'm even more perplexed by this statement:
is that saying that 1. Paul was "caught up" to heaven like Elijah and 2. that he is seen by the EO's as the founder?

Paul was not caught up to heaven like Elijah exactly, but you will remember that he was granted a vision of heaven. I cannot remember the scripture citation, but you will probably recall it.

As far as the founder of the See of Rome, I think it is Orthodox belief that Paul and Peter were co-founders, as it were.

Isn't the Icon of Saints Peter and Paul, holding the Church a symbol of their building up the Church at Rome together?

Isn't this why June 29 is celebrated as a common feast in both Latin and Orthodox Catholic Churches?

I guess I'll just respectfully say I think that's a fundamental misreading of history. The bishop of Constaninople before or after the sack of the city by the Crusaders or the Ottoman domination that followed did not have jurisdictional control in other sees. The other bishops did not receive a pallium from Constantinople as they do now in the western church. The only thing that could be binding on all of the churches were the actions of the councils agreed upon by all. Moscow assumed the status of protector of Orthodoxy in a philosophical sense perhaps, but it certainly never assumed direct control or oversight beyond any church but its own.

It's that "Imperial City" bit, originally.
Surely you aren't implying that this might have something to do with politics!

Of course, we all know that the place of honor was given to Rome and then Constantinople only because Moscow wasn't invented yet.

St. Vladimir hadn't been born yet.

This article: The Rock of the Apostle Peter, is one of the best treatments that I've read on this subject. It's long, and there's some Greek to wade through, but IT IS GOOD, IMO. It confirms that the "rock" refers both to the Confession of Faith, and to the person of Peter too...because, can you really seperate the man from the confession?

sorry bout all the winkies... I didn't think anyone would actually clink on the link, so I tried to paste it.

Whenever you have a ; followed by a ) you will always get this guy. and for some reason, he pops up a lot in essays.

I usually have to go through and put a space in between the ; and ) to prevent that winkie from appearing.

Once I had a prayer that had a couple of winkies suddenly appear in it and I just about got a warning until I explained it to the puzzled mod. I try to do an advance posting so that I can catch those winkies before doing the final posting.

Yes, it's a pain. but also a surprize.

That's way too many winkies to edit....lol...I was just happy that I could actually post such a long article, and wanted to hurry and post it before my computer started timing out again. It's been happening alot lately...after being online for about 30 minutes, everything sorta freezes. drives me crazy.

Maybe one of our moderators could help you edit? I think probably not as they are already overworked.

I'd be happy to help edit. Speaking only for myself, I was over in Struggles/Depression and Christian Advice, as well as other areas of CF trying to offer Christian counsel and support. Sorry if something vitally important was missed.

I believe it represents the church, period. Not specifically the church at Rome.
