  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I talked my husband into building one by our barbeque. So we just need to get the cinderblocks. Should be interesting.

Im not sure if you are aware of this or not, but I think that you may need to use firebrick lining inside the cinder block stove, or perhaps use some kind of refractory cement coating. Regular cement blocks will crack and crumble under the intense heat.

Concerning the name of this Rocket Stove, there is a verse in old testament, concerning the twice a day lamb sacrifice, at the dawn and dusk. biblehub.com/exodus/29-39.htm
At dawn and dusk, the top of the atmosphere above you is either for or against the movement of the earth around the sun, but say at noon or midnight the perpendicular-to-the-surface is towards or against the gravity of the sun.
Now consider just a sphere in space orbiting another sphere... the faster it's orbit the futher it must get. but if it's radius-of-orbit is lengthen then it must slow down, and if it's radius of orbit is shortened then it must speed up...
I'm completely open to the {neglecting 1/infinity theory} concerning forces. but it did take God Jesus a whole day to work out the 4th day of creation http://www.biblehub.com/genesis/1-14.htm

I have just been reading up on these, I am going to in the next day or two make one out of #10 cans for a little outdoor cooker and charcoal maker. I have thought of making one in my barn out of brick and earth similar to the one in your picture, maybe i will get the time and ambition over the winter to do so, good luck with yours and any advice you have would be appreciated.

Bad idea to use conventional cinder block. You need

Yep... if you want the stove to last much more than a single use you have to do this...

It's not choice long term, no doubt, but its fine to get you by in a pinch. I certainly wouldn't want it as a permanent thing. Nothing about a lego cinderblock stack screams "permanent" but temporary as it's obviously rigged. There are folks "building in" more permanent cinderblock firepits (whether with unconventional cinderblocks or not) this one is only a rig job to boil some water or cook a quick meal if you had to. Which would be fine (for me) as one of several options we can use to cook in an emmergency situation (if there ever was one).

For example, even as we each might have our home ovens and/or stove (as ours uses electric) but if we dont' have electric (just say) we have our grill on our porch as well as other portable stoves (each of these uses propane). We also have a smaller Bar B que and a smoker (each of these use coals). We have a couple of larger and the smaller purchased rocket stoves (which each use wood as fuel) along with this cinderblock option as well as our standing stove in the living room (all of these using wood). We also a couple of camp ovens which would typically sit (more passively) on top of a few of the stoves expanding these options into workable ovens. And lastly we have a sunoven (which uses the sun to cook) reserved for sunnier days which could help conserve on all the other fuel sources.

I consider all options, and the others would likely endure longer than any makeshift cinderblock stove, its certainly not built to heat a camp all day long, but good enough to boil water or make a quick hot meal. The measure of time I might get out of something like that would remain to be seen.

Oh wow, EinsteinGirl, thats cool too. The first thing I thought was look how clean that burns. I can use something like that to help warm pipes in a particular area where they are more suseptible to freezing.

Good to know, thanks!

You may find this a little safer when it comes to the flame Needs a 9v battery.

Yeah I have seen those before not the one with the fan though, then some guy on a boat using one for heat (too many candles under something that retains heat so well) went up in flames the wax caught on fire and roasted his wall.

These make me nervous for some reason

I have been without hot water for a few days now. I need to replace the elements in my electric water heater, i assume. I need to test them ans see if they are bad, but most likely thats the problem. Its old heater, and needs replaced, but until i can do that i'll need to fix this one. However, i will be building one of these rocket stove water heaters, for emergencies. If i would have built one before, like i was planning, i would have hot water now. This spring i will be building this, God willing.

Both these ideas, in these videos, seem cool.

BTW, building a closed system, for a water heater, can be dangerous, so make sure you do your research before attempting such a project. As long as you dont use a pressurized water tank, without a proper safety valve like hot water tanks have, you should be ok. Caution must be observed when creating steam which creates pressure, which can turn into a potential bomb.

This guys setup got me thinking, a gas hot water tank might be perfect for a rocket stove water heater. A gas hot water heater, as apposed to an electric heater, already has a piece of stove pipe running up through the middle of the tank, and that's how it heats the water. I could just remove all the gas burner components from the bottom of the tank, and replace them with a rocket stove burn chamber. I think that would be easy and work well, perhaps. I just need to find a used gas hot water tank that someone doesn't want. I see them around from time to time. I could add fittings so i could hook up a garden house water inlet, and an outlet, that could be used in an emergency.
