Rock Music - Is it really a sin?

I agree, you can't just throw a statement like that out and not explain yourself. What in your opinion MR. Cheese is wrong with contemporary christian music.

Christian music is an industry. There is no getting around that. It exists to make money. Just because something is called "Christian" doesn't mean it's good for anything. I think most praise music these days is written by people who failed creative writing. If anything the atrocity that is passed off as music I find an insult to the creator. But that is subjective.
What does a song, band say? I'll stand in church and think that we're all singing some feely good new age stuff. But that's subjective as well.

Well, many of them directly quote Scripture, so I'll stand by that much, anyway. Yes, there are ones I'm not too fond of, myself. However, to wholesale reject or accept a genre is not the best of ideas.

Okay, but will you say the same of Zondervan, because they make money selling Bibles? Definitely take a look at what you're brining in, supporting and celebrating, but don't put something at arm's length because it's part of an industry, either.

As individual Christians we have to be very discerning of the “Christian label”. It’s found not only in some Christian music, but it’s also been found behind some pulpits and worn proudly by some so-called “Christians”. Some people use the label like the hotels use that little “sanitized for your protection” paper band that you see around the toilet.

I like to look for Christian messages within popular music. The Goo-Goo Dolls have two good songs out. One is a remake of “Give a Little bit” and the other is called “Better Days”. These songs carry no Christian label but the message is clear.

I listen to the lyrics myself, i care nuthing for the beat unless its really wack, but its not the genre that u need to worry about its the message of the artist that u most need to be concerned with

The tune to Amazing grace was original the tune to a drinking song. If God can use a drinking song for his glory, why can't he use rock and roll.

As for the comment about Christian music being all for the money, I beg to differ. Have you ever heard of a group called casting crowns? They spend actualy little time on th road and makeing musci for sale. This is because they already have full time jobs, youth ministers. They do not do it for the money, and yet thay are a very popular Chriatian music group.

Also, you should hear their music. It is all biblical and even challenges Christians stop being simple pew warmers and preach the gospel to the unbelievers in action and in word. At the same time I will listen to some old hymns that do little more then say Jesus loves me. Yes Jesus does love me but there is alot more to it and modern Christian music makes this clear.

In my humble opinion, this is something God works with you on throughout your walk. I once had a pastor tell me that if I can do something knowing that if God walked up behind me I would be okay, then it was something that was okay for me to do at that time. That doesn't mean it will be okay forever. When I first came to Christ, I had no issues watching movies with sexuality in them. Now, after walking for nearly 12 years, I feel differently. I have a hard time watching movies with a lot of sexual scenes. I feel they are not what I want to put in front of my eyes. The same with metal. I used to love attending concerts and hanging out with my friends, but the closer I got to God, the more I wanted to be surrounded by people who love Him also. No one can say "Don't do this" or "Don't listen to that." You know what you can put into your mind and still honor Christ. You mentioned videos and how they bothered you (or so you alluded to them bothering you by stopping the point you were making short of making it). This shows that you don't like watching the videos. So maybe for you at this moment in time the music is still okay but the videos are inappropriate. It is all a growth process that we don't achieve overnight.

I will pray that you will find your "safe" place and hear God as He directs you as to what is good for you and what is not good for you at this moment in time.

Why can't the dissidents mention specific bands or at least start a wiki or something?

Creed's song sacrifice and Hoobastanks the reason are really good but I admit that maybe a few of their other songs may have missed the mark.... but we all stumble sometimes, still very, very good songs imho.
