Sadly as I read many of the posts here the dim glimpse I get of the posters is that of people who really struggle with accpting that they are loved. Not everyone (obviously) but many. I am just writing to assure you all that God loves you so much that he sent his son for you to die and bear your sins that you would not have to face eternal damnation.
1 John 4 tells us that anyone who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen yet even without this bit of sound advice I just want to say
I LOVE YOU May God be with each and every one of you here as you continue on your journey with him in his love and holiness.
Blessings and Peace be with you all

God's love and Word is conditional:

John 14:15
If you love Me, keep My commandments.

John 14:21
"He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him."

John 14:23
Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him

Nope,. If Gods love was conditional, then salvation would only be avaliable for those who measure up. Which every single human being would fall flat on, because not one of us can meet Gods standards on our own efforts

Following God and keeping his commandments, is something that happens as we walk with God allowing His Holy Spirit to change us from within.

If getting to heaven was about works, then none of us would make it, because while we still have the flesh to deal with without Christ we would still miss the mark

Romans 11 5-6 So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. 6And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace

If Gods love for us was based on works, then what about the disabled person who is dependent on a person for their most basic of daily needs., God comdems tthem to hell because they had the misfortune to be disabled?

You are correct that following Gods ways instead of our own is apart of maturing in our christian walk, however it does not mean that Gods love is conditional

Sounds more like our love is conditional not God's...
When I came to God, I was struck with the overwhelming desire that I wanted to start doing things in the way of the Master. Not because God said I had to do it his way or I had any delusions that I could do it well enought to measure up to Gods standards, but as I allowed the Holy Spirit more acess into areas of my life, things were starting to change and I was wanting to do things Gods way/ . Not because I had to but it was an outworking of the path I am on, but also as I started learning to trust God, I discovered His way is the best way.

His way is absolutely terrifying at times, some of the suggestions and directions have absolutley scared the Geewilligers out of me. However I know that Gods loves me unconditionally, and His will is for me to live a life of abundance, and that while his way often can seem alot scarier, I know he has the best for me

When I was a complete basket case doing the best I could to take myself out of life, God cared enough to intervene on one occasion that without divine intervention I would have died, but also he kept putting outstanding christian men and women in my path who let me know than no matter how bad things seemed, there was hope

Hardly the actions of a God whose love is conditional

Thank you for posting this.

Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 8:38-39
38For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,
39nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Bzzzzt, nope, wrong, thank you for playing. God's love is UNconditional and His Word is more powerful than anyone's misuse of it. Matter of fact I noticed everything you quoted above was about OUR love for GOD, not the other way around. These assurances of God returning love to those who love Him do NOT in any way, shape, or form "prove" that His love is conditional. After all, scripture also states, "We love Him BECAUSE He first loved us." and "God so loved THE WORLD that He gave His only begotten Son that WHOSOEVER believes in Him should not perish" -- whosoever means ANYONE and God does NOT pick and choose. Whosoever will may come. His love is there like the Father's love for the Prodigal whether the prodigal ever comes home OR NOT.

That is what I believe and that is why I love my Saviour, because He is NOT like humans whose love is "conditional" and only if they get THEIR way on things. To make God out to be that way is a gross error and will do you harm when it is finished harming those around you first.

Matt 22:34-40
34 But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, 36 "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?" 37 Jesus said to him, " 'You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets."

I believe there is a key in this passage. That the second command is enabled by the first, and as someone else has already pointed out, the first is enabled by God. We love God because He first loved us.

The trick is to stay face to face with God in His love. Sounds simple doesn't it!

how, exactly, is that conditional? there's a reason why God is different from earthly parents, he has the agape (unconditional) love humans don't.

No worries. God's Love is not only unconditional, it is indeed irresistable.

Well most people have already said what I am about to reply but hey here goes anyway.

God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16)
1 John 4:19 We love Him because He first loved us
Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
1 John 4:8 He who does notg love does not know God, for God is love
Romans 8:38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come
39 Nor height nor depth, nor any other thing shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The scriptures you give for the love being unconditional point first of all more to the love we have for God not the other way round.
God may not show us his love when we are walking out of fellowship with him becuase we still have a responsibility to this earth. However the love of God is eternal. Don't let the enemy deceive you.
