That's just not true. Extensive archaeological work has found that the even large homes of the well off would hold no more than 50 people standing room only. But the custom was to meet over a meal, usually reclining. It all points to meetings of 10-20 people maximum at any one time.

Only in the 2nd century was the first evidence of homes being enlarged, usually by knocking out a wall, to allow for up to 50 people around a meal or up to 100 standing room only. Dedicated buildings did not appear until Augustine in the 4th Century.
