  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Maybe someone has an answer here for me.

How did Samuel, of the tribe of EPHRAIM, entered the priesthood? There is a notation in my Bible's explanation section which says that Levites whose families belonged to the Kohathite clans had been alotted towns in Ephraim (see Jos. 21:20-21; 1 Ch. 6:22-26) The descent of Samuel’s father seems obscure. In 1 Samuel 1:1 he is described as an Ephraimite. In 1 Chronicles 6:22, 23 he is made a descendant of Korah the Levite.

Ezra 2:62-63 These sought their register among those that were reckoned by genealogy, but they were not found: therefore they were, as polluted, put away from the priesthood. 63 And the Tirshatha said unto them, that they should not eat of the most holy things, till there stood up a priest with Urim and with Thummim.

Samuel was not a priest.

1 Sam 1:1
And there was a certain man of Ramathaim-Zophim, of Mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite;

Elkanah was Samuel's father. The reference in Chron is a different Elkanah. The Levites were given cities in different areas of the country as a place to live, but this is different from an inheritance.

Joshua 21:19
All the cities of the descendants of Aaron, the priests, were thirteen cities with their pasture lands.

The names are easy to get confused In Kings there are two kings reigning at the same time with the same name UGH! One is Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat and the other is Jehoram son of Ahab.

Before there were kings and rulers, the priests were the judges of the people. In Samuel's day, he was the judge. Was he wearin the Urim and Thummin?

Ezra 2:62-63 These sought their register among those that were reckoned by genealogy, but they were not found: therefore they were, as polluted, put away from the priesthood. 63 And the Tirshatha said unto them, that they should not eat of the most holy things, till there stood up a priest with Urim and with Thummim. (the word "Urim" and it means "light". "Thummim" means "completion or perfection")

1 Samuel 7:15 And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.

1 Sam 1:11
And she vowed a vow, and said, O Lord of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your maidservant, and remember me, and not forget your maidservant, but will give to your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.

He was dedicated, this is not the same as being a Levitical priest.

1 Sam 1:22
But Hanna did not go up; for she said to her husband, I will not go up until the child is weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the Lord, and there remain forever.

Judges 13:15-16
And Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, I beseech you, let us detain you, until we shall have prepared a kid for you.
And the angel of the Lord said to Manoah, Though you detain me, I will not eat of your bread; and if you will offer a burnt offering, you must offer it to the Lord. For Manoah knew not that he was an angel of the Lord.

Judges 13:19-20
1So Manoah took a kid with a meal offering, and offered it upon a rock to the Lord; and the angel did wondrously; and Manoah and his wife looked on.
For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground.

I would not recomend "trying this at home" but from the text Manoah knew what he was doing and offered a burnt offering that was accepted and he was not a priest (this is Samson's father).
