Rebaptism

First of all I would like to say ths is not for debate (hopefully), just information.

If I rember correctly Adventists sometimes practice rebaptism. First of all is this Biblical or a tradition of some kind? (Just so you know it is not ever practiced in my current church as far as I know, not that that makes it right or wrong).

Is rebaptism still done? Is it common? Are there times it is required? Are there times it is recommended? Are there any official statements?

Lots of views with no answers. I'll try one more time. For example, I was raised an Adventist and was baptized in 1972. I have been a member of another denomination for about 20 years. Would I have to be rebaptized to join a SDA congregation now?

Maybe nobody has heard of getting baptized more than once..........

I was adventist for a long long time and all my friends and family still are. Never really heard about it but wouldn't be surprised if it is recommended for people who leave and then come back.

I have heard of it and while I don't represent the thinkings of the church I can imagine that if someone was an Adventist and baptized young and slid away from the faith, that they might want to rededicate themselves to God when they return.

The one thing I can say, and this might apply to other denominations as well, is I don't agree with the practice of being baptized into the Adventist church... that, to me is not Biblical... being symbolically baptized in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, yes, but not a denomination.

From what I understand rebaptism is nothing more then a tradition, usually for individuals who have left the church, and then want to come back. Typically it's not necessary, I think it's done more for the sake the the one returning. There is no doctrine as far as I know around this practice.

From what I understand, communion is enough for re-dedication.

In Acts 19:1-7 Paul re-baptized some who were baptized by John the Baptist.

There is the biblical ground for re-baptism after receiving new light.

If someone has already been baptized (in another church for example), the church can accept him/her into membership with simple confession of faith without re-baptism. If someone strayed away from the faith then comes back, he/she can request to be baptized again, but it is not required.

ECR is exactly right, hisotrically rebaptism has been used int he SDA church for the reasons stated. Is it biblical, no. What I see is that the denoms are into numbers, plus there is this entire game as to who is God's "chosen" kind of thing. I know in the Adventist church one can be considered to have apostacized when joining another denom, especially if they worship(most of them on Sunday)

Thanks. I'm not sure what the baptism of John was, but if it wasn't by the name of Jesus, I would imagine they should have been rebaptised.

This sounds like a reasonable practice to me. I've never heard of being baptised twice in my current denomination, but if someone wanted to, I guess I don't see the harm. I'm glad it isn't required. Thanks!

I appreciate you saying we are not baptised into a denomination, I couldn't agree more! I was baptised in an Adventist church and I would never be rebaptised in order to join another denomination.

I suppose if someone feels the need to use it as a sort of rededication, there is probably no harm in it.

I believe the SDA have the last day message for the world as given to the early SDA church... I do not have faith in the denomination, I have faith in Jesus Christ

Well, for instance, hisoritcally in the SDA church it has bascially been taught that one was only following God and goin to br saved in they followed Adventist practices. i say that because we spent a great deal of time trying to convince potential converts that we are the remnant church of whom the Bible speaks, we are the only ones who keep th eentire 10 Commandments, only ones with this special message for the world....etc., etc., etc., i am sure you get my drift now.

Now JWs do the same thing, although, I don't know all of the doctrine they use to support it. I know that they believe that only 144,000 of them are actually going to heaven, the rest will be here lviing life as usual, where Jesus just kind of takes over the government. Now, I will give the JWs this they seemed to be more open to new light with more study, so it might have changed, but the last time I talked with one, that was it. I can be wrong. I have only been SDA.

Then there are those who believe if you don't speak in tongues, you are on some lower level of spirituality then others who do. It is the equivalent to the dietary thing for Adventist, vegans being the most desirable level of spirituality, etc. Even eating "clean" meat leaves one more vulnerable to the desire of the flesh. LOL!! Sorry could not help that one.

Of course, these days to ask them out right they would say this doesn't happen, but once you get into studying tih doctrine, especially at a Rev. Seminar, crusade, tent meeting of some sort........Anyone ever heard of the famous crusade sermon "Adam's Mother's Birthday"?.........then you find it is exactly what they are saying. I know, I have heard it for 53 years.......

IWO, God likes us best because we are doing the right thing.

That being said, there is a movement to get away from this kind of teaching. That is a good thing!

thanks for the reply, now I got it. I do agree that it is a little easier for us SDA's to get "puffed up" because of all the light that we have.

That being said, however, I do believe we as SDA's have God's last day message for the world. The Seventh Day Adventist Church has been entrusted with the responsibility to call God's people out of Babylon, lest they receive of her plagues..

Let's be careful with modern "movements" that try and take us away from what we have always known to be truth. The Bible and the SOP make it abundantly clear that many will apostasize and depart from the faith, being seduced by doctrines of devils. I'm watching it happen as we speak. The shaking has already begun and many are leaving the truth behind because it's "not as popular".

It's not uncommon. Several groups have adopted a form of "we've got it and the rest of the world has not" theology. Sadly, this type of thinking finds its way into many Christian groups. What's sad is that we already know what immediately follows pride . . . . .

Thats the ecumenical way... lets forget our differences and just all get along.
