  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Basically I don't care what anyone's opinion on doctrine is and really don't waste time agueing about it unless I think it is aimed at God's reputation. What I can't seem to tolerate is deliberate harm on others but that seems to be where I differ from others which is really my question, how do you do it?

i was wondering how you guys get 'refreshed' in God? i feel like i've been in the wars the last six months and am really exhausted. God is faithful i'm not questioning God just wondering what do you guys do?

I like variety personally. but main thing is prayer and bible study daily. sometimes my little son's bible cartoons are even my bible time.

also helping others is great way for refresh. giving and helping others (without any other reward than simply wanting to be a blessing) really seems to help God give us what we need. I scrubbed the carpets a couple nights ago, pretty thankless job really, but it did feel great. also finding ways to share about Jesus is great, I like sharing christian literature to others, which can also be thankless job too, but still feels good to have meaning, purpose, and sharing with others, not being selfish. those are just couple ways God refreshes me, it is daily walk with Him ask and you will recieve if you persevere

The biggest thing I do is realize just how blessed I really am. I know that times can be tough and things can really seem dim but there are always the little things that we take for granted that if we take a moment then we can really say just how awsome his power really is.

Just take a moment each morning and realize how blessed you really are.

I like to light candles, inscent, listen to soft music, like Enya 'Shephard's Moon'.
Daily I am looking into the eyes of Jesus in the kingdom of heaven of His eternal love that never fades, that He has brought me to. I never take my eyes off of Jesus, nor does he I, and so I like to proclaim my love of Jesus to others everyday.

JESUS...YOU ARE MY TRUE LOVE!

I have been through a really rough last few months and that is so true. It hasn't really been anything I'VE done, but rather just keeping on, preservering even when I felt like God had left me... and slowly God answered me and refreshed me. He brought me to where I am now, and its not overly fantastic but its a long way from the pit I was in. Perserverance. Its all about perserverance.

God wants us to love and He
Will give love in return!
As we all been through rough spots
God is there to lift us up.
I know that walking the path the God sets for us is hard and long. I am happy to here all of you finding your own ways to walk Gods path. It is great to know that there is no one right way to "be with God".

Two very different things are powerful in MY life...

Singing. I LOVE to sing (pretty good at it, too) and I can play the guitar. A GREAT song (it may be very traditional, it may be a rockin' contermporary song) moves me. Just getting into it. Sometimes I sing LOUD! I've been known to put a CD in the car and do this while driving - which must put on a show for those around me!

During my journey into Catholicism, I learned the opposite sometimes is what I need. Silence. Profound, lengthy, undistracted silence. Not necessarily praying or even thinking. Just silence. Trying to empty my overly busy brain, my heart that tends to easily get overflowing with emotions and stuff. It's rather like Eastern meditation in a way. I'll do this for like a half an hour (which BELEIVE ME, is a LOT longer than you think it is!!) - listening for that still small voice, sensitive to God's hug - or maybe tug.

(Warning: Protestant heresy) Contrary (maybe) to all my emphasis in General Theology to Sola Scriptura, the Bible isn't devotional to me. I'm SUCH a student that except maybe for some of the Psalms, I IMMEDIATE start asking questions, digging around in my library, googleing, wondering about that word or what this means. So, reading Scriptures usually doesn't work in that way for me.

I hope that helps in some way...

Pax!

Second Timothy chapter 1
3I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;
4Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;
5When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.
6Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. 7For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

what stirs you ? a good movie : the scarlet and the black with Gregory Peck ; the Cardinal with Tom Tyron ;
the left hand of God with Humphrey Bogart ?

Praise and Worship music and meditation ?

Speaking God's promises aloud ( preaching yourself happy ) ...

God will come and hug you ... when you rejoice in Him
& if you feel very hot ( as on pentecost ) ; at peace (only God can give ) smell the Rose of Sharon / Lilly of the valley ... the aroma of Christ ... you have touched the throne of God

There are a couple of things that have always worked for me.

Notice my username. I sing. My first experience with glossolalia (before I knew what it was!) was in song. When I need refreshing, I will pull down one of my hymnals and begin going through it, singing as I find hymns that meet my need. Usually they're the traditional Presybterian hymns of praise -- Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise... Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty, THe King of Creation... For the Beauty of the Earth... The Church's One Foundation... O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing... When I survey the Wondrous Cross... Holy, Holy, Holy... A Mighty Fortress is Our God... Be Thou My Vision... Here I am, Lord... Come Thou Font of Every Blessing...

Other times, I will find water and walk along it. I grew up near Lake Michigan, and that is where I first encountered God in nature. So even a creek, with the sound of running water, will bring back that strong heart-connection. Solitude and nature are a sure refresher of my sin-sick soul. They always bring me back to focus on God, and put my own little worries and concerns in the proper perspective.

And while I rather agree with Josiah about having a hard time turning to Scripture for inspiration, since I'm SO focused on study most of the time with it, I have been learning slowly how to sometimes turn off that analytical part of my brain and let Scripture sink into me. I do it through Lectio Divina, or through memorizing Psalms and praying them contemplatively. (I use a Catholic rosary set, but pray Jesus Prayer on the decade beads and a memorized psalm on the in-between beads.) The repetition and prayerful meditation open my heart to the words in a way I can't find when I just read and study the words.

Speaking of reading, I also sometimes turn to the more mystic among the Christian saints. Bernard, Therese, and Hildegard are my current favorites. Hildegard created a lot of music for her sisters, too, and I have a CD of some of the chants she wrote. Very good background music for Christian meditation.
