  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

i've been saved for a couple of days and its wonderful, but my biggest problem is figuring ou twhat to watch and read and write (because I want to be a writer) I know it sounds crazy, but in a way, I feel if I change the way I do things, I'll be closer to God. Should I change what I watch/read/write?

Hello, my answer is ABSOLUTELY! The things that we watch, listen to and read have a huge impact on our thinking and minds! i still have things from years ago playing in my head........many of them that i wished i had never seen! Since The Lord came into my life have given up secular music, movies and reading and replaced them with reading The Bible, Christian movies, and Christian music.......and let me tell you, it has made a wonderful difference in my speech and thought. Ofcourse the Glory goes to Jesus! But, yes it is a great idea to change and monitor the things that you absorb! May The Lord continue to shine upon you my friend! amen.

Depends on what you're already watching, reading, and writing. These things have a certain influence on our thoughts, and therefore our personalities, our speech, and eventually the way we look at life. What we need to do is transform our minds to be in line with God's mind (Romans 12:2). We do that by reading the Bible, putting what it says into practice, and praying about how we can do so. This isn't to say that anything and everything secular can't be enjoyed, since we can enjoy what is clean (Philippians 4:8). However, we need a heavy dose of God's influence daily to counteract and reverse the world's influence.

Sometimes when God is first teaching us something, we are more sensitive to our actions and situations that affect our learning.

Like being immersed into a new culture, sometimes it swings first one way, then the other, before a balance is reached.

I agree that it takes time. If something seems wrong to you, avoid it until you can search the scriptures to find out for yourself what is right or wrong. (Paul teaches that if you believe it's wrong, then it is for you. There are different levels of maturity.)

The Holy Spirit is your guide, and anything you learn from men or women should always be verified against what is in the Word. You can search through topics by using your Bible's index, or better yet, get a Strong's concordance.

In my early walk with God, anything He seemed to be telling me, I would look up in the Bible. Any word that seemed imporant I would search in the Strong's to find other associations. Any verse which seemed very imporant, I would look up every word to find meanings.

It took time, but it was well worth it! "Seek and you shall find."

Change the way you choose what you watch/read/write, certainly. But that'll result in keeping some, tossing others, and changing your whole attitude and approach to yet a third.

The big principle that changed for me is that of redemption. "How will this help me redeem (improve/better things through sacrifice and care) -- myself, my relationship with God, my friendships with other people?"

And ... welcome to the fold!

Keep you eyes and ears open, and be aware, beware, and don't be unaware of all things going on around you.

Becoming born-again basically means that you need to renew your mind.

If you have doubt on anything, ask questions, but don't take one answer as the truth. Get at least three views.

But, you need to begin to read His Word, and become involved in a Bible Study group.

There are a lot of worldly books around, including Christian type books that can be deceptive.

You need to be wise now, because the enemy will try to take away what you have received.

Heavens, I came to our Lord in 1957, and I am still learning.

The old world will be look at in a new light, and the shedding of that which is unacceptable in God's sight will become important to you. Fear no evil, for God is with you. Seek those things that are pure and true. Search Him and in Him you will find the peace that passes all understanding. Draw closer to Him and He will draw closer to you.

Since you are a writer, write the story of your adventures with God. We need more writers telling what it is like in those first steps in faith. The struggles, the challenges, and the path the Lord lead you on to grow and mature in Him. Others are eager to read and it will be a great witness for them to gain and have faith just as you do.

All the advice given in the postings so far are excellent advice and I pray that the Lord will lay before you, material for you to see, material for you to read, and inspirations for you to share in your writtings.

Phil 4:8 , as already quoted, is definitely a good standard to go by. And just allow the Holy Spirit direct you aswell, He'll let you know if something is not pleasing to Him.

Really, I think it depends on the topic of what you're reading and writing. If it's a topic that will cause you to personally fall away from faith or even others through your writing, then stay away from it. If it's just fantasy type writing (I'm thinking of C S Lewis types of things), then don't worry about it

YES! What you read, watch, listen to and who you hang with can affect your faith seriously. Start out slowly. Find a christian radio station and try to block out pornography (if you watch it even a little). Just start cutting back. Once you cut back and the enviorment around you is christian-friendly then you'll feel more relaxed and less pressured. Trust, it works!
