You could not become a member of any baptist church I know of SBC or Fundamentalist if your "baptism" was by sprinkling, because frankly thats not baptism. Hence the phrase re-baptizers. Back in the day people use to die for this.

Some baptist churches recognize sprinkling as an unpreferred but still valid form of baptism.

in my church you can have membership moved as long as you were baptized into the church from which you are moving your membership

Thank God I am not part of the SBC or a Fundie church then. As far as people dying for it, seems like a waste of life to me...

I've never been to a Baptist church that required Believer's baptism as a pre-requisite to membership.

Sprinkling can be performed on adults. Yes almost all baptists churches reject paedobaptism (infant).

I am a member of the First Baptist Church of Chittenango, and we are an American Baptist Church. As I said earlier, no we do not except or are we in favor of babytisms as a valid baptism. But one can have a valid believers baptism in any protestant church, whether it be by immersion or by sprinkling. The act of immersion is favored by most Baptists as it is here, but it is not required for one to be a member here.

I would agree with you that you may be baptized in any protestant church, I would have to be in opposition to sprinkling though myself.

We usually look at the time at which you were baptised. If you were baptised as an infant and had no idea what was going on then we may recommend that you be baptised again now that you are saved and here. We would still explain that baptism doesn't = entrance into heaven.

Since it is a public confession of faith we normally only recommend a new baptism if the person had never chosen to do it themselves. What we normally find though is that even those who were in a "sprinkling" church desire an immersion baptism, and we are happy to oblige.

My husband was raised Lutheran and wanted to be fully immersed as an adult....

Our SBC said it had to be done by a SB minister.

Well, then....I suppose that would leave out Jesus, Paul, Timothy, Mark....you get the picture...It really bothered him and he chose to not get baptized.

He later had an incredible encounter with the Holy Spirit and the Lord 'exploded' in his life....truly amazing. We changed churches and ended having a baptism in a neighbor's hot tub. A South African pastor gave the most incredible one hour talk on the beauty of water baptism and the whole experience was a memorable night indeed.

My daughter was fully immersed by a Methodist pastor in the local lake....she hasn't joined her SBC yet, but I wonder if they would say it needed to be 'done over'.....

I, personally, have been baptized three times and loved every minute of each one....Each time represented a new 'death' to my flesh and a new revelation of the Father's love.

Membership is essentially the right to vote on church policy in the congregational governance system.

If there is no members list, does the church give voting rights to anyone who gives offering? If they use their baptism list then they are essentially like the churches some have mentioned who require baptism in their church to have voting rights. I would be concerned about the separatist view of such a church.

In Baptist churches, you become a member when you are baptized. If the baptism is believer's baptism, and by immersion, then they will accept the membership.

Actually, the congregation doesn't vote on anything of which I'm aware. Grievances and such are settled via Matt.18. If either side is still dissatisfied, then the issue is taken up with the pastor, or if the grievance is against the pastor, then with his pastor or the head of the fellowship. If the grievance is with the fellowship head, then it's taken to the board of elders, of which he's submitted to. Church policy is handed down from the top. I realize that such a system worries many, but if I don't like how things are run, then I'm free to leave.
As far as baptisms go, if a person wants to serve in the church or "become a member", and he's already been saved and baptised (at an orthodox Christian church), then he's not required to be baptised again. We see that as being superfluous and unnecessary since the individual is already saved.
Concerning tithes and offerings, I believe that the church keeps the records strictly for gov't. accounting purposes and to give a receipt to those who've given over the past year and would like one for their own records or income tax purposes.

No that is not true,We movied from texas to Montana,and when we
went back to church We just told them where we were baptised,don't know
if they ever got in touch with them are not.God Bless.

At my church, they will take your word for it that you had a valid baptism if you say you did. Obviously this means you must be old enough to have remembered your batism. It must be by immersion.

you only need a letter if when you are requesting membership it is to become a pastor/deacon or paid head of a ministry... and if you want it stored in your file.

Some people serve a church for MANY years in high respect, but due to a move or something they go to a new church... they want their reputation to follow them so that they are more trusted when serving in their respective ministries ect...

So letters, if you want to provide them are very welcomed (and usually followed up with some phone calls) but are not required for membership.
