I heard today from a Catholic relative of mine that, while the Catholic church, believes the Greek Orthodox sacraments to be valid, it doesn't believe that Russian Orthodox sacraments are valid? Is this true? If so, why is this? I know it shouldn't matter as Orthodox don't believe the Catholics are valid, either, but I am curious.

Hmm. *headstratch* Perhaps he is just mis-informed, then. He also seemed to think that EO and Catholic churches were interchangeable, in the sense that an EO or a Catholic could commune freely in either as they both have valid sacraments.. except the Russians.

Nope. I'm not exactly sure about the Catholic stance on this, but I know for a fact that (very, very rare extreme circumstances aside... ) that we are only allowed to commune in our own Church.

I can go to the local Greek Orthodox Church, or the Russian Orthodox Church, or the Antiochian Orthodox Church, etc. As long as the priest knows that I am Orthodox and I follow their particular traditions to prepare myself properly I am allowed to commune without any problems. I can not partake of the Eucharist in a Catholic Church even if they allow it.

A Catholic person is not allowed the Eucharist in an Orthodox Church. They are not in communion with us.

Hi Eirlysa!

Welcome to the forum!

As Cobweb has stated, the Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, Ukrainian Orthodox, Albanian Orthodox, Bulgarian Orthodox, Romanian Orthodox, Polish Orthodox, and Finnish Orthodox Churches all fall under the umbrella of the Eastern Orthodox Church. There are five Patriarchs (or Pope's) in the Orthodox Church: Constantinople, Jerusalem, Antioch, Alexandria, and Moscow.

Just as Italian Catholics, Polish Catholics, Irish Catholics, etc., all fall under the umbrella of the Roman Catholic Church and are part of one Church, all the different ethnicities listed fall under one Church, and are in communion with one another.

We are NOT in communion with the Oriental Orthodox Church, which compromise of the Armenian, Coptic, Syriac, and Malankara Orthodox Churches.

I hope this clears up any confusion you may have.
