Well, I haven't been on these forums in quite a while, but I want to get some input on art/church history related topic.

If you don't know who Lucas Cranach is, I'll fill you in quite briefly. He was a painter and friend of Martin Luther who also made what is probably the most famous portrait of Luther. (It's the one on Wikipedia if you're interested)

That being said, I find it rather interesting that Cranach was also a painter of erotica. My question then is: How could he justify this kind of work?

God can sometimes use the secular for His will.

My father told me that in the Raiders of the Lost Ark, the part where the Nazis are struck by the Ark of the Covenant, this part was used by God to demonstrate that He can do that. My father told me that God used Steven Spielberg, who usually makes satanic (snakes, skulls, spiders, corpses, etc.) movies.

Also, in my opinion, God used the Passion of the Christ. The scenes where Jesus sheds blood, my father used those scenes to teach me to apply the blood of Jesus. In my opinon, God used Mel Gibson, who is known for making very violent movies. And there were demons in Passion of the Christ; this was not necessary.

Just because artwork has naked people in it does not mean it is sinful. The artist is not responsible for how people use the work of his talents. It is possible that he was marveling in the glory of God in His creation of the human form.
