What the heck is "the surface of the deep"?

My inclination is that anything deep does NOT have a surface...b/c it's deep, right?

New American Standard Bible (©1995)
The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.

My advice when reading early Gen. is as follows:

1. Throw out all translations.

2. Think allegory.

No - not unless it's a hole. The ocean has a surface.

It more than likely refers to the depth's of the oceans and waters.

As is mentiond Depth is a measurement and a surface is at the top of the measurement. The surface of a deep hole would be the ground, and the surface of the ocean would be the air.

It's probably some sort of primordial ocean that surrounds the earth. I think the force from Genesis 1:2 is that God exerts His power over the primordial waters. Unlike the gods of her neighbors who thought the primordial ocean was a god who was slain in order to create the earth (Tiamat specifically), the primordeal oceans were just another thing that Israel's God created and controlled.
