Trying my first crown royal maple. It's my desert after a meal of Czech sausage, sour kraut, cheesy mashed potatoes, and shiner bock. It tastes like a stack of pancakes saturated in Whisky.

Is that good or bad?

My wife is having some Alberta Springs...I don't feel like anything, maybe some lapsang tea.

Well, one would need to be in the mood for it. They hit the pancake flavor perfectly. It is much sweeter than rum. It is similar in sweetness to a schnapps but it is still obviously Whisky. Right now I think it is interesting but if I was in the mood for something non sweet I wouldn't want this.

Have you noticed an increase of spiced and flavoured whiskey's lately? I don't know what it is but I've seen half a dozen flavoured ryes in the last 6 months alone.

That would make sense. They are sweet though...after dinner drink for sure.

Indeed. It's certainly a novelty and not a serious contribution to the Whisky portfolio.

However, for what it is it is unique and good. It hits the spot.

I have not tried an old fashioned. Will have to some day. Enjoying a glenfiddich right now while watching the hockey game.

Glenfiddich is good. However there are several similar priced single malts I prefer over it. But it'll certainly do.

Aberlour and Glenlivet are my other go to 'cheaper' single malts. If I am feeling saucy, I will go with a Balvenie Double Wood, which is excellent, but a bit pricey at times.

My favorite is Laphroaig 15. I like Lagavulin 16 and Ardbeg 10 as well.

Islay for me if I'm spending a lot.

I just never acquired a taste for Islay, but I know some guys that do. I may have to try some again. Any recommendations on one with not too much of a 'peaty' taste?

All Islay malts are heavy on the peat. I like that smokey peaty flavor so that is why I like Islay malts. If you don't like that flavor Speyside malts are the ticket.
