Purgatory - Must we believe it!

Status
Not open for further replies.
These are typical of questions/comments that arise when discussing Purgatory. Always looking to improve my answers, I thought I'd throw these out for discussion.

1. "OK, Brian, I accept that there are temporal consequences to sin (e.g., David losing his son, the "discipline" of Heb. 12, physical death and disease), but where's the evidence for saying these extend beyond the temporal realm (i.e, our earthly sojourn)?

2. "As I read, in Catholic thought, baptism removes ALL consequence of sin, eternal and temporal (e.g., CCC #1263). Why then doesn't the 'blood of Christ' do as much? Statements like 1 John 1:9 ("the blood of Christ purifies us from all sin") seem more comprehensive than anything I see about baptism, even if I accept it as regenerational. Why doesn't confession of my sin after baptism accomplish as much (i.e, removal of temporal consequence) as does my repentance/baptism did to start?

3. "Verses like 1 Peter 1:22 ("Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart.") speak of purification as past-tense, complete, thus denying the need for the later, after-life purification that purgatory assumes."

Dear Brian,

Unfortunately, many Christians have this strange belief "once saved always saved." This pervasive heresy has always been with the Church from the beginning. Before Protestantism, OSAS was called minimalism - just do the minimum to get into Heaven. The problem is that people just are not repentant -- they really aren't sorry for their sins. They don't want to give up their evil habits. They believe that God is merciful and will save them, so they don't really try to be good.

Christ said that He will vomit the lukewarm out of his mouth. That includes those who do the minimum, who love themselves more than God. These minimalists are far from being purified.

On the other hand, in the Catholic Church, there is the example of St. Dominic Guzman whose face shown with a holy light and whose body gave off the odor of sanctity. The Orthodox Christians honor St. Seraphim whose whole body glowed like a torch -- so brilliant was it that people could not gaze upon him. St. Seraphim was transfigured. We are supposed to be like St. Dominic and St. Seraphim - purified on this earth and transfigured into the very image of Christ so that we don't need any purifying fire in the afterlife. This is what theosis is all about. This is our calling.

We must pray for each other that we may be saved and not forget the faithful departed who are so dependent on our prayers.

Yours truly in Christ,
Elizabeth

[middle]O gentle Heart of Jesus, ever present in the Blessed Sacrament, ever consumed with burning love for the poor captive souls in Purgatory, have mercy on them. Be not severe in Your judgments, but let some drops of Your Precious Blood fall upon the devouring flames. And, Merciful Savior, send Your angels to conduct them to a place of refreshment, light and peace. Amen.

A Prayer to Jesus and Mary

O Most loving Jesus, I humbly beseech Thee that Thou wouldst Thyself offer to Thine eternal Father, on behalf of the Holy Souls in Purgatory, Thy Most Precious Blood, which poured forth from the Sacred Wounds of Thine adorable Body, together with Thine agony and death. And do thou likewise, O sorrowful Virgin Mary, present unto the Heavenly Father, together with the dolorous passion of thy dear Son, thine own sighs and tears, and all the sorrows thou didst suffer in His suffering, in order that, through the merits of the same, refreshment may be granted to the souls now suffering in the fiery torments of Purgatory, so that, being delivered from that painful prison, they may be clothed with glory in Heaven, there to sing the mercies of God for ever and ever. Amen.

Absolve, O Lord, the souls of all the faithful departed from every bond of sin, that by Thy gracious assistance they may deserve to escape the judgment of vengeance and enjoy the blessedness of everlasting light. Amen.

V. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.
R. And let perpetual light shine upon them
V. From the gates of Hell,
R. Deliver their souls, O Lord.
V. May they rest in peace.
R. Amen.
V. O Lord, hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto Thee.

Let us pray

O God, the Creator and Redeemer of all the faithful, grant unto the souls of Thy servants and handmaids, the remission of all their sins, that through our devout supplications they may obtain the pardon they have always desired, Thou Who livest and reignest world without end. Amen.

A Prayer for a Deceased Priest

O God, Thou didst raise Thy servant, N., to the sacred priesthood of Jesus Christ, according to the Order of Melchisedech, giving him the sublime power to offer the Eternal Sacrifice, to bring the Body and Blood of Thy Son Jesus Christ down upon the altar, and to absolve the sins of men in Thine own Holy Name. We beseech Thee to reward his faithfulness and to forget his faults, admitting him speedily into Thy Holy Presence, there to enjoy forever the recompense of his labors. This we ask through Jesus Christ Thy Son, our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer to the Poor Souls in Purgatory

O holy souls in Purgatory, you are the certain heirs of Heaven. You are most dear to Jesus, as the trophies of His Precious Blood, and to Mary, Mother of Mercy. Obtain for me, through your intercession, the grace to lead a holy life, to die a happy death, and to attain to the blessedness of eternity in Heaven.

Dear suffering souls, who long to be delivered in order to praise and glorify God in Heaven, by your unfailing pity, help me in the needs which distress me at this time, particularly (here mention your request), so that I may obtain relief and assistance from God.

In gratitude for your intercession, I offer to God, on your behalf, the satisfactory merits of my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day (week, month, or whatever space of time you wish to designate). Amen.

A Prayer of Supplication to the Poor Souls in Purgatory

O holy souls, as one truly devoted to you, I promise never to forget you and continually to pray to the Most High for your release. I beseech you to respond to this offering which I make to you, and to obtain for me, from God, with Whom you are so powerful on behalf of the living, that I may be free from all dangers of souls and body.

I beg both for myself and for my relations and benefactors, friends and enemies, pardon for our sins, and the grace of perseverance in good, whereby we may save our souls. Obtain for us peace of heart; assist us in all our actions; succor us promptly in all our spiritual and temporal needs; console and defend us in our dangers.

Pray for our Holy Father, the Pope; for the exaltation of Holy Church; for peace between nations; for Christian rulers; and for tranquility among peoples; and grant that we may one day all rejoice together in Paradise. Amen.

Prayer for the Faithful Departed

O most compassionate Jesus, have mercy on the souls detained in Purgatory, for whose redemption Thou didst take upon Thyself our nature and endure a bitter death. Mercifully hear their sighs, look with pity upon the tears which they now shed before Thee, and by virtue of Thy Passion, release them from the pains due to their sins. O most merciful Jesus, let Thy Precious Blood reach down into Purgatory and refresh and revive the captive souls who suffer there. Stretch out to them Thy strong right hand, and bring them forth into the place of refreshment, light and peace. Amen.

O blessed souls! We have prayed for thee! We entreat thee, who art so dear to God, and who art certain of never losing Him, to pray for us poor miserable sinners who are in danger of being ****** and of losing God forever. Amen.

A Prayer for the Suffering Souls

O Adorable Trinity, cast upon us Thy merciful glance. Look at these souls whom Thou hast created, and who suffer far from Thee an unutterable grief. Look at Thy poor contrite servants, humbly supplicating Thee in their behalf. For the sake of the glorious Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus Christ, and our Mother also, deign to shorten the sufferings of these desolate souls; and to us all who labor in the miseries of the life, grant the grace of eternal salvation.
I am only a sinner, but in obedience to Thy command, dear Jesus, I dare to intercede with Thee for my captive brethren. Deign by Thy Holy Sacrifice to appease the justice of Thy Father and open Heaven to those poor souls who languish far from Thee. Amen.

V. Grant unto them, O Lord, eternal rest;
R. And let perpetual light shine upon them
V. May they rest in peace.
R. Amen.

Prayer for the Souls in Purgatory

O Almighty God, with Whom live the souls of the perfect, and in Whose holy keeping are placed the souls of those that depart hence in an inferior degree of Thy grace -- they being, by their imperfect character, unworthy of Thy Presence and therefore detained in a state of grief and suspended hopes -- as we bless Thee for the saints already admitted to Thy glory, so we humbly offer our prayers for Thine afflicted servants, who continually wait and sigh for the day of their deliverance. Pardon their sins, supply their want of preparation, and wipe away the tears from their eyes, that they may see Thee, and in Thy glorious sight rejoice eternally, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED:

Into thy hands, O Lord, I commend the souls of Thy departed servants [N, N..], and I pray Thee give them rest, O Lord, in the place of Thy rest, where all Thy Blessed Saints repose, where the light of Thy countenance shineth. Grant that our lives may be godly, sober, and blameless; that we may be worthy to meet them again in Thy heavenly Kingdom. For Thou art the Resurrection, and the Life, and the Repose of Thy departed servants, O Christ our God, and unto Thee we ascribe glory; to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.

A prayer for the Dead

Be mindful, O Lord,of my parents, relatives and friends, [N. N. and N. (name those whom you wish to remember)] who have fallen asleep in the hope of resurrection unto life eternal, and also of all those who have completed their lives in piety and faith; pardon all their trangressions both voluntary and involuntary, whether in word, or deed, or thought. Shelter them in a place of brightness, a place of verdure, a place of repose, whence all sickness, sorrow and sighing have fled away, and where the sight of Thy Countenance rejoiceth all Thy Saints from all ages. Grant them Thy Kingdom, and a portion in Thine ineffable and eternal blessings, and the enjoyment of Thine unending Life. For Thou art the Resurrection, and the Life, and the Repose of Thy departed servants, O Christ our God, and unto Thee we ascribe glory, together with Thy Father who is from everlasting, and Thine all-holy, and good, and Life-Giving Spirit: now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Hello to all:
I just completed the translation of a most beautiful article from French>>>>English on Marie-Anne Lindmayr and her relationships with the Holy Souls in Purgatory. This article was nowhere to be found in english so enjoy it and all comments welcome.
Cheers

Marie-Anne Lindmayr
1657-1726

MESSAGES FROM BEYOND

It was in 1974, under the Christiana editions, that the diary of a Carmelite nun was published in Switzerland, making known the extraordinary virtues of Marie-Anne Lindmayr, born in 1657 and deceased in 1726. She was in relationship with the Holy Souls in Purgatory, received numerous precisions on the cause, the nature and the duration of their sufferings, on the horror of sin, on the intensity and the duration of its expiation. To release them she had to endure unspeakable sufferings. We highly recommend the reading of this work. Here are some extracts:

His Holiness Paul VI proclaimed Saint Thérèse d’Avila doctor of the Church, most likely for the faithful, shaken in their faith, to be inspired by the revelations and the teachings of this great mystique.

Saint Thérèse d’Avila had a spiritual daughter north of the Alps: Marie-Anne Lindmayr. The genius of these two mystiques shows us numerous common points. Not only do they belong to the same order, but also like her master, Marie-Anne is of great severity towards herself. Practicing a rigorous asceticism under the guidance of enlighten spiritual directors, she was favored with ecstasies and visions, and deployed a great intellectual activity.

When we discovered her diary, we were fascinated by all the spiritual experiences of her soul: we immediately realized, as if struck by lightning, that our time and epoch, which was intellectually impoverished and spiritually chilled, needed to taste this marvelous food.

By a special permission from God, Marie-Anne Lindmayr (1657-1726) was in relation with the Holy Souls in Purgatory. She received numerous precisions on the cause, the nature and the duration of their sufferings, on the horror of sin, on the intensity and the duration needed for its expiation, and finally in the manner how these burning Souls languish far from this infinitely Holy God, the object of all their desires. Marie-Anne endured unspeakable sufferings to deliver them, but she also received, concerning the spiritual world, revelations and visions made to open our eyes and pull us out of our indifference. No theologist could give us a doctrine on the ends of time, or that of the Purgatory specially, in a manner as clear and vivid as did this spiritual daughter of the great Saint Thérèse d’Avila, doctor of the Church.

Vision and description of Purgatory

It was at that time that I was often taken into Purgatory, and I was able to see this frightening place. On May 15th, after Holy Communion in the Jesuit church----whether this was presented to me, or was I taken there by my guardian angel? I do not know. I saw ahead of me a gigantic pit of which I could not see the extremity, because it was in a state of total darkness. Nevertheless I was able to determine that this pit was occupied, but I cannot describe its exact shape. It seems to me that from one end to the other there was a state of great disorder and a horrible smell, like a pigsty. I had to remain there for a long time, even though it gave me nausea, really. After this I saw another place, on the right hand side, but close by to the monstrous pit. This place appeared to me similar to a mill wheel, from which swelling water was cascading. But it was a cascade of fire, which was falling off, and I was astonished that there could be a cascade of fiery water. But when I came back to myself, I understood: the deep endless pit was hell; the cascade, was Purgatory (pre-hell) where poor souls are plunged as in a fiery water, but with a major difference not according to punishment, because they are immersed in fire, but according to the order and the love with which they suffer. From my relation to the Souls of Purgatory, I clearly saw that they are fully united to the will of God, that they are extremely patient in their sufferings, that they are really happy to have escaped hell, much deserved by their sins during their lifetime, and to find themselves in Purgatory. This satisfaction of the departed souls in the middle of their sufferings, I would wish it to myself and to all humankind in all our sufferings and adversities, because, then, we would not be able to find impatience on this earth.

It was also revealed to me that to the Holy Souls, one hour seems longer than twenty years of extreme suffering on this earth. I also understood that if we would offer them to get out of Purgatory and to go to Heaven, although not completely purified, the Holy Souls would rather stay until judgment day than appear before God even with the littlest stain. I noticed, among the Dear Souls in Purgatory, a patience beyond word, and I learned from them to accept obedience lovingly, by realizing how, through the application of this holy virtue, we can help them and render them as much service and as quickly. Oh yes, we can call them Holy, the Holy Souls of Purgatory, since they are full of love for God. They burn more of the love to see this God so good and to rejoice in His presence, than they burn of the fire of punishment.

Another time, I saw Purgatory as a prison on fire, as a place where the fire is frightening. All the fires of the world united could not compare to it, and the poor souls were plunged into it like sparks of fire. They are so numerous that my eyes could not embrace at a glance the entire multitude, so vast it is.

Shortly after, Purgatory was shown to me as a large fishpond into which were a multitude of fishes. These fishes were entirely white and were tending their open mouths towards me. It was signified to me that I should refresh them by the tears of my eyes and the blood of Jesus-Christ, by offering it for them.

It was also told to me that I should spread salt over them, this I did not understand right away, until it was explained to me: I had to do good deeds and offer them for these poor Souls.

To give an idea of the vast number of these poor Souls, God made me see Purgatory in the form of an anthill. I inquired why the Souls were shown to me this way. I was made to understand that an anthill is covered, especially in winter whereby we don’t see the actual great number of ants. But if we stir it with a stick, or if we put smoke to it, the ants will come out by the thousands. I realized that there was in Purgatory, many, many Souls hidden from our eyes, as in a covered anthill as I had just seen. I should therefore not be too surprised if I noticed so much eagerness towards me by these Souls. It is as a result of His love, His mercy had come in this anthill. By his first tears, Christ wanted to manifest that so few people think about the Souls in Purgatory in a way that helps them. He was using me as the end of a stick to stir the anthill, for me to see in Purgatory the hidden crowd of Souls that we think are already in Heaven.

Then the Holy Souls were shown to me under the shape of a beehive hanging from a tree. I was told not to be alarmed by their great number, as nothing soiled enters Heaven. Now, people usually live like real society men, without due regards to the other world, to eternal life and without recognizing their faults. But God looks at everything according to His Justice.

I was again told that I should consider the very brief time of sufferings which, when compared to eternity, is nothing but a short instant, or again, consider the infinite reward that Heaven will be after these sufferings. To gain Heaven means that we shall suffer. Now, most people do not suffer since they do not believe in this virtue that we have to do penance to expiate our sins. So, it cannot be otherwise: they will be retained for a long time in this place.

The sufferings of husbands and wives

The venerable Marie-Anne represents as follows the sufferings of spouses who, during their lives, did not practice chastity according to their state: In 1709, my guardian angel took me to a place unknown to me. I saw a large lake full of sulfur and pitch. I could not see anything in this lake since it’s whole surface was boiling like water boiling at high temperature. When I came back to myself, I began praying in front of my “Ecce Homo” and asked the Holy Spirit and the Holy Virgin Mary to enlighten me as to the sense of this vision. It was revealed to me that this is a place in Purgatory and a place of special sufferings, incomprehensible, inexpressible, for a special category of Souls: that in this lake are completely submerged those who, in their married life, were entirely submerged in sexual pleasures, living an animal like life rather than human. I was also exhorted to witness a special pity for these Souls, since we rarely think of them, and to offer for them to God the cruel scourging of his only Son. It was also reveal to me on this occasion, that God shortly recalls back to Him these people, and that He recalls also very early their children.

On March 10th 1714, it was also revealed to me that in the Holy state of marriage, we don’t live like we should and that a lot of great sins are committed. That’s why God punishes severely in this life already, in the manner just stated, but more severely still in the next life where many married people are ****** because they did not live as they should have due to their state.

The duration of sufferings in Purgatory

Purgatory is a place that the royal psalmist calls “Land of Oblivion” (Psalm 88,13) and of which the Eternal Truth says itself: “Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.” (Mathew 5, 26) To this place of torture we can apply the word of the Psalmist: “You have caused friend and neighbor to shun me; my companions are in darkness.” (Psalm 88, 19)

Concerning the length of sufferings in Purgatory, the venerable tells us: The poor Souls showed me that in the next life all is calculated with an absolute precision and that in this life it is most difficult to comprehend. I was often astounded, before, at the sheer possibility that there could be so many Souls in Purgatory, and retained for so long, while we believed them to be already in Eternal joy since a long while. I was able to see this in the case of my grandparents, since my grandmother was unable to come to me before seventeen years. The stay in Purgatory can often last hundreds of years. All this led me to understand how big is the offence to God from sin and all that was not expiated in this life has to be expiated in the next life. God has given us the means to cleanse our soul in this world and to purify it. But these means, how are we using them?

The Holy Souls in Purgatory taught me what is necessary to make good use of the sacraments, of prayers, of indulgences; that by the sufferings, adversities, sicknesses, we can expiate much. But all these things happen without any positive reaction from us.

Following this, I was not surprised anymore to see in the flames of Purgatory people dead for one hundred years and more, because I learned to always consider how infinitely good God is, compare to how evil sin is in opposition. I learned how short are the sufferings in Purgatory compared to eternity and that all suffering is nothing compare to the suffering in hell.

For those that have been hard on their neighbor it is difficult to arrive at their deliverance, because what is hard remain hard.

In 1704, I was visited by a Soul. It was the Soul of a deceased person, dead for fifteen years. During her living, she was known to be a pious woman. She told me: “We don’t make it to Heaven so quickly”; it is also a suffering that people consider you a saint, because not enough effort are made to pray for you.”

Those that have the shortest stay in Purgatory are, according to the indications of Marie-Anne Josèphe, the meek, those that are good hearted, the merciful and those that die accepting willingly their death.

Oh yes! The Souls of Purgatory can be called Holy, because they are full of love for God and burning more of the desire to see the face of this loving God and rejoice, than of the flames of their sufferings.

Marie-Anne Lindmayr (continued)

What the Church teaches about Purgatory

Judas Maccabees, says the Bible, send to Jerusalem twelve thousand drachmas of money for a sacrifice to be offered for the soldiers killed in battle because he thought that the best reward was reserved to those that were dying in the best sentiment of piety (2 Macc 12, 39-45). It is therefore a holy and salutary thought to pray for the dead, so they may be delivered from their sins (2 Macc 12, 48).

The Holy Church teaches us: “that there is a Purgatory and the Souls that are detained are helped by the prayers of the faithful, but especially by the offering of the sacrifice of the mass.”

We are punished by where we have sin

Following this, the Souls would appear to her in a manner and with the characteristics corresponding to their state. She writes: God has taught me as to what the needs of these Souls are and how we can help them.

Certain Souls came to me with tears in their eyes. They asked me to do penance for them by controlling my eyes and to abstain from curiosity. Others appeared to me absolutely starved, tired and in an undescribable state. They were begging me to fast severely on bread and water and therefore repair their sins committed during their lives by excess in drinking and eating.

Others made me understand, by their behavior, their unfortunate angers, and their acts of impatience. They were begging me to help them through acts of patience and kindness.

Souls, who, during their lifetime, were never mortified, were showing me a cilice (instrument of penance - haircloth). When I was fasting for them a fully dressed and abundant table was shown to me.

The Souls who had sin by word were appearing to me with their mouth shut by a nail to show me I was to keep silence.

The Souls, who, on this earth, had a hard heart and were without pity, can only be helped through acts of mercy and generosity.

What has failed to the tree has to be expiated on the tree (of the cross). That is also why that all that is missing on other matters must be expiated by the same manner that the failure or breach was committed.

Seducers who converted in time, but they did not have the chance to repair the damages caused by their sins, I saw them in an appearance similar to the evil spirit, because it is in this manner that the devil seduces man so they may fall.

The poor Souls who, during their lives, did not control their eyes had to appear with unusually large and deformed eyes. The Souls full of sufficiency, full of pride of their knowledge, would appear with deformed heads.

When pride was the major cause of sin for Souls, these would appear with a cancerous face. If a Soul would appear and pointing to its forehead with a finger, this would mean she had been hard headed all her life.

A face, which would turn away from Marie-Anne, would mean pass susceptibility, just like she would recognize the lack of love for work through deformed hands.

When Marie-Anne would see a Soul in a corner praying, she knew disobedience and having disturbed the peace in its lifetime was the cause of it.

Those who through their lives had love animals excessively would appear to her with the animal around their neck.

Those who were too preoccupied with earthly things to the detriment of spiritual matters, she would recognized them because of their childlike form.

The Souls that stays the shortest time in Purgatory

Marie-Anne knows, by the experiences done with the Holy Souls of Purgatory, that those who accept death willingly spend the least amount of time in Purgatory.

The countess Marie-Anne, Josèphe, Thérèse Preising, nee Rechberg auf Hohenaschau, was very attached to the venerable Marie-Anne. She had frequent relations with her during her life. That’s why she was able shortly after her death, which occurred on 17 October 1721, to come and see Marie-Anne as described here: “On 17th October 1721, a Friday morning at 4:00 am I was urged to pray for the countess who was in child delivery pains. At nine o’clock in the morning she passed away. She appeared to me at the Choir shortly after her death, all happy, because she had been pious all her life. She appeared to me as she was in her living, holding an apple, in one hand, which she shared in half with great generosity. I learned from her how much we fail to our duty by making days of the nights and nights of the days. The countess mostly requested from me the Holy Communion, which she had often missed in her life. She admitted that she never deprived herself with food, figuring it was not necessary, and she unnecessarily wasted precious time. On 18th October, the whole community offered her the Holy Communion. On Friday the 24th October, she was entering Heaven, because of the Sabbatine Privilege of the brotherhood of our Lady of Mount Carmel, of which the countess was wearing the brown scapular. I saw her above in an inexpressible joy and I heard a most beautiful hymn. They were chanting: Vanitas vanitatum. The reason why the countess entered so soon into Heaven, was because, as a young mother, she willingly accepted the will of God and had strongly requested herself the Sacraments.”

How can we help the Souls in Purgatory

How can we and how should we help the Souls in Purgatory? The answer stems in part at least, from what was just said. But it will be good to look deeper into the matter by checking the notes from the venerable’s diary.

The most efficient means are those utilized by the Church to help the faithful departed: the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the Sacrements, and prayers. This is why Saint Pierre Damien makes this prayer: “O Holy Host, You that breaks down the gates of Purgatory, and opens the door of the Kingdom of heaven to the faithful!”

The severe justice of God, according to the venerable Marie-Anne, requires the full payment until the last penny. That has to be understood not only as debts of money, but also debts contracted through all kinds of faults against the commandments of God and the Church as well as against the Christian justice. This applies especially for the faults against God and our neighbor, against this great commandment of love to which we don’t pay enough attention. It is therefore really necessary for us, poor humans, to believe and to keep in mind that, in the other world, things are completely different than we can imagine and that the cleansing of our soul by frequent confession, communion, complete with the firm intention not to offend God again; is really necessary. By behaving as such, we won’t leave too many debts behind us.

Christ taught me that after the Holy Mass, the Sacraments, and the indulgences for the departed, the best mean is to be virtuous. Christ Himself showed me by comparing an injured or sick person. But since I am not so clever, I will not attempt to explain it. That is why you will have to make a greater effort at understanding what I am about to write. The doctor is called for a person gravelly ill. At first glance, the doctor realizes that this man is really sick and in a bad state, but he does not diagnosed by visual examination only: he establishes a diagnostic as exact a possible, questioning the sick, asking him where he feels the most pain, and where and how it all started. When the doctor has established the proper diagnostic of the disease, he will use the appropriate means and soon the sick will be better. But if the doctor did not see the exact nature of the problem, he will not be able to help the sick, even by prescribing the most expensive medication. It may well be that a very inexpensive product will cure him because it is the one most appropriate for the disease. Christ referred to the poor Souls in Purgatory as being such patients. I could not have helped them, these poor Souls, if I had examined them only superficially and did not take the time to learn what were the faults and sins that was causing them such great pains and sufferings. It would not be reasonable to put a bandage on a hand for a person injured on the head.

Similar to a doctor or surgeon, I had to study thoroughly to find the proper means to help these poor Souls in Purgatory.

It is without a doubt that the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the most precious mean, the most efficient mean and the most salutary to help the Souls in Purgatory, and can even extinguish the fire of Purgatory. But It is not always applied nor applied in the same way to all the Souls, because in the manner we have sinned, so in the same manner we must expiate and suffer.
