when I was 18 a spirit of prayer came over me for a few weeks after cruising around the city with my buddies, and felt a strong unction to pray with another friend of mine when we had returned home. Sometimes we would pray for 45 min.

After a period of time I got mixed up with the wrong people and some substance abuse and it ended in being baptised in the holy spirit and becoming born again, or spiritually awakened for the first time.

I realize after these years went by that it was all that praying that did it before hand. I started out reading the word and praying and a desire began to grow and awesome things began to happen.

after that experience, the sun literally appeared dim to my natural eyes.

So guys i'm trying to develop a great prayer life. Any tips? How do you stay engaged/focused in prayer? What's your favorite thing about prayer? Thanks - Tyler
Our Father which are in heaven... meditating on each and every word.. slowly so that the Lord can bring more meaning to every little bit of it. ...

Ask God about every little thought that pops up in my head during prayer.. Do it like it is an ongoing conversation with Him.. and listen to what He says.. but before you begin this type of conversational pray, ask God to let it be just His voice that talks back to you. You will learn a lot about yourself, your weaknesses, self control even in thinking. because we are to pray without ceasing.. so if you take everything to God in prayer.. it makes a major difference to your life and what goes on around and in it. ..

Open yourself up to God.
This act of opening up to God as expressed by words from your heart to God,
is the greatest prayer a person can pray.

Giving yourself to the Lord by making yourself available to Him
and placing your trust in Him and bringing Him into your thoughts
is communing with God (prayer).

This can be done by your affirming your willingness to God by inviting Him into your life
in a greater way, through your words or thoughts expressed to Him.

Father, I need you, I need your help.
Take my life and cause me to be like your Son Jesus Christ.

The Lord's prayer is a great framework.

Opening up your thoughts to the Lord by acknowledging Him (thanking and praising Him) and
inviting Him to be with you throughout your day is good.

I find that thanking the Lord throughout the day for any good thing
that comes my way is a way of inviting God into my thought life
and causing myself to be mindful of or God conscience throughout the day as I
open up my thoughts and heart to the Lord.

You can talk to the Lord about anything, good or bad, God already knows
your every thought but when you acknowledge to God that He is welcome
in every thought, you are opening yourself up to Him as a friend and
you are coming to God in trust and in hope that He will help you to
improve and grow in Him.

God loves you completely, absolutely and unconditionally so if you open
yourself up to Him you can rest assured that God will never condemn you
but He will gently and lovingly shape your heart by His amazing love
and friendship as you hang out with Him as He lets you know that He is for you
and wants His absolute best for you.

Think of your prayers to God like your running inner dialog only
turned outward toward God and shaped by you into a talk with your
absolute best friend that you can trust with your every thought, motive,
failure, sins, dreams, desires and everthing else you would share with
your best friend and even your thought that you would reserve for yourself
in your most intimate private thoughts.

God is so awsome...

Like I said, God knows it all anyway but by you inviting Him into
the areas that most people think are somehow hidden or locked away
from God, you are learning to trust God and His faithfulness to you
as your dearest and closest friend.

Words like friend do not do justice to how close the Lord wants to be
to you, perhaps intimate lover of our souls is a closer description of where
God wants to take us in relationship with Him.

Hope this helps you.

God is worth the pursuit.

Speak from your heart, let it all hang out.

My favorite thing, I guess, is the connection with God. Sometimes I don't feel it at all but I know it's there regardless, and that gives me comfort. I guess one of my favorite things about prayer is praying for others 'cause it's about the only time I'm not obsessing on me, and that feels really free.

Make your prayer as real and simple as your heart, don't look at prayer in the sense of something you need to master or learn much... just talk to God the way you would if you stood before him, he knows all things already, clever words or sentences don't please him... he just wants to hear from you, not have you say the correct words. Talk to him, keep talking to him, express your sincere feelings and desires to him.

Your faith and your sincerity are what matter to him... not your skill. Just talk to him and believe and you will change the world you live in.

Our God is not a Pagan God or spirit that needs to be summoned up, hes there already. He also chose your side from the beginning of the world, you don't have to beg him to help you. Prayer to our God is not like weaving a spell... the key is your faith, not the correct combination of words.
He responds to the cry and faith in your heart, not the perfect words.

I like the saying that

"Begging is the weakest kind of prayer, God already chose sides, hes on your side, you do not need to talk him into wanting to help you."

God wants to answer your prayers far more than you'll ever want to ask, just talk to him, the power has always been in him, it never lies with us. All that we do he gives us mercy and grace to do. We just need to ask.
It is never up to you to figure anything out or to overcome something... your job is to ask God to give you what you need and enable you to do what must be done, no one has anything that wasn't given to him, Paul said that.

Pal Handy has really covered this subject very well.

I must confess that when I decided to follow God wholeheartedly, I thought that praying was the easy part. Well, I have found that remaining steadfast in prayer is not easy at all ! The Bible tells us that God longs for us to meet with Him in a place where we can be undisturbed (Matt 6:6)

He is our "Abba Father" and would like to share the good times with us too - not just be a last resort when we've nowhere else to turn.

Prayer which is spoken aloud adds substance to the prayers because then we know that our prayers are audible to the enemy. Jesus prayed aloud and in the right circumstances we should, too.

While I was undergoing discipleship I was taught that "the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much" (James 5:16) Our righteousness is Christ in us and us in Him; our fervency comes from allowing the Holy Spirit to intercede on our behalf; and finally, what could be more effective prayer than to read a portion of God's Word and to pray it back to Him, with thanksgiving! Did you know that God watches over His Word to perform it? (Jer 1:12)

Know that this is God's will for all Christians engaged in prayer, that we make known our supplications to Him with thanksgiving (Phi 4:6) This means that although He knows exactly what we need even before we ask it, it's still OK to ask - but after that we should thank Him as though the thing asked were already answered! This is the prayer of faith which is based on the evidence of things as yet unseen and the substance of that for which we hope.(Heb 11:1)

God is INDEED worth every ounce of pursuit!

I personally pray as one of the first things on my schedule every morning. I wake up pretty early and have a nice place set aside. I give a quick prayer, thanking God for everything He is doing in my life, requesting intercession for things that are on my heart, and just generally praising Him for all His greatness. After that I will read my Bible a bit and then go back and forth between reading and prayer as I see fit. I often won't even get through a whole chapter. Many times I will meditate on two or three verses for a long time.

Really, it just comes down to what works for you. I do it first thing in the morning because my day always goes poorly when I put it off. If God is to be glorified through me, I need to give Him priority over my day. That means that He is the first thing I think of in the morning and the one I focus my eyes on thereafter.

Listen to the words of this 200 year old hymn...

What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sin and griefs to bear;
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Oh what peace we often forfeit,
Oh what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer.

Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble every where?
We should never be discouraged;
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we week and heavy laden,
Lumbered with a load of care?
Precious Saviour, still our refuge;
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
In His arms He'll take and shield thee;
Thou will find a solace there!
