  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was a bit enamored with the idea myself a few years back while getting an electronics degree. This will no doubt become a reality in the future. It will likely be used for nefarious purposes I fear...
Some software developer already has interfaced his own brain and can initiate a Google search with his thoughts. Pretty cool stuff, but it will definitely be abused.

1. is the best and has the most potental to lower the number of shottings.

2 and 3 are not going to be that effective. 2. exists in several schools in one form or another already and can get bypassed one way or another.

Not as the OP framed it. A system where students have ready access to counciling could be productive. A system where every students have at least 2 people on their back at all times, which is what the OP proposed, will push even more students over the edge.

Not to mention how his clergy based ideas would play out for minority relegions or lack of religion. I could hardly wait for when a Sikh student was partnered with a Muslim Imam, or for that matter when a [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]e gets a Sunni. Or when the same Christian pastor gets students who are Seventh Day Adventists, Society of Friends, Pentacostals and Mormans!

Fair point. But at what point do we send them to the counciler?

You are right on that. I can see that go all sort of wrong on non-denominational students or non-believers.

I withdraw my support for point 1. It needs to be toned down to just having councielers avalible with teachers having clear critera to send students to them.

The School I attended, all Students were encouraged to be armed, there has never been a shooting there.

I still have nightmares about those I had to kill in NAM. For Home Invasion, I use Tranqulizer guns only. No need to kill, just put them to sleep.

The purpose of the Conselors is not to get down on Students. Their purpose would be to slove problems with Wisdom. The religious counselors would be only for those already religious. As for non-believers, the counselors would be from the parents and students philosphy of life. I never had a conselor who was a jerk, only kind and helpful.

Hoping the OP is being a bit facetious here...

Because if it's to the point where the proposals are honestly "make schools look like military installations with 3 set of security doors and bullet proof glass" and "every classroom has a panic button that teachers can hit that will drop security doors", and "weapon shape recognition that puts the school in auto-lockdown"

Isn't that kind of an indicator that maybe something else needs to change?

Seems like it'd be cheaper and easier to just strengthen background checks a bit, and add the concept of allowing an armed security guard (with some serious credentials, not just some average local cop) to be in the school.

Agreed, "religion-specific based counseling" is often not real counseling at all...but could often have the counterproductive effect of making the behaviors even worse.

For instance, if you have a kid who grew up in a home where all they did was bash <group XYZ>, and is picking on and lashing out at people in that group, sending them to the person (who was likely the same person who gave their parents the bad ideas in the first place, which then got passed down to them) doesn't seem like it would help matters much.

"Billy Smith has been picking on XYZ because his parents taught him to hate XYZ...to fix this problem, let's have him talk with the people who taught his parents to hate XYZ"...doesn't seem like a great plan.

Christian Parents do not teach their children to hate others. You do have a point concerning Muslim Families. When I taught in Dearborn MI Schools there was a major problem with Tribes hating even Muslims from different Tribels. I often had to break up those fights. I was onl allowed to knock out a Student who asulted me. After knocking out the biggest meanest ones, Students did not dare to hit any staff member around me. I became a Golden Gloves Boxer while growing up. I had a good record of knock outs. It would be the Howell Parents we have problems with KKK Parents teaching hate, but even that has been dealt with. A hate crime is uncondictional being kicked out of School for good, no second chances.
I can not speak of other School Districts in other States and Areas.

"Christian Parents" aren't a monolith.

Some certainly do teach hateful ideas to their kids...or if they're not doing it directly, putting their kids in Sunday Schools and Wednesday night youth group meetings that are.

I remember the Southern Baptist Sunday School classes I was forced to attend...up until we were in 6th grade, they were still teaching things like "AIDS is God's punishment to the gay people" and trying to use biblical justifications for their opposition to what they'd call "mixing of the races" (with regards to marriage)

If you can find one.

It's tough to find that kind of experience in many suburbs...and I don't think 6-months of cadet training and keeping rounds on target on a paper plate once a month constitutes "experience" for that type of situation.

Only about a quarter of officers fire their weapon in the line of duty throughout their career, and the majority of those are in inner city or more dangerous areas. I've posted it before (I'll see if I can dig up the link), but out in suburbia, the overwhelming majority of cops go their entire career without having to fire their weapon on duty.

Most probably aren't mentally prepared for that type of situation... few people are besides police who've worked a dangerous beat, or people who saw combat in the military.

I don't have an issue with the police department being the one to provide the armed guard, but it should be someone more like SWAT, and less like "I spent the last 8 years doing traffic related duties"

Um... be sure to practice good fire safety with something like this. Don't want to end up with the kids trapped behind a metal door during a fire.
