Damian began to give out orders as the Perla Pacífica drew closer to the French galley, under full sail. The stern dipped into a large trough, and then pointed skyward, seawater and spray washing the deck. Perhaps the storm was not an ideal time to try to stop a pirate ship, but this one was particularly elusive and Captain Lanaya risked losing it if he backed off.

Perla Pacífica drew alongside the sleek black ship, which was holed just above the waterline and crippled, its main mast down. Sailors had cleared the deck of the Perla Pacífica and cleaned the cannons, and now they manned them, although keeping out of sight.

Now side-to-side, the ships were but ten feet from apart, an easy distance. Hoping for an easy kill and an escape, the pirates threw grappling hooks but did not fire. Well placed shots from the Perla Pacífica killed the man at the tiller, and the pirate ship veered towards them, but did no damage.

Suddenly the empty deck was full of Spanish soldiers, fighting. Taken unawares by the attack, the pirates fell back quickly, but were cut off from their ship. None surrendered, all died. With two dead men and several with sword-wounds, Damian had to make sure of no casualties, and he did just that. A large party went aboard the pirate ship and captured the captain and remaining crew, then they fixed the damaged pirate ship makeshift with lumber brought for that purpose. The cargo was transferred, and several French prisoners that were destined to be sold by their own people. These were given several choices -- become sailors or be taken as prisoners to Spain until a ransom of some sort could be arranged for. Of course Damian had strong dislike for battle, and the prisoners were treated as guests, as they were -- royal guests.

Charity tried to conceal her smile, and failed.
"What?" Sydney asked.
"You just look so...serious. It's rather funny. And I apologize for my behavior. It's just that today hasn't been the best of days for me. Actually, it's never been the best of days for me."

'Rita swept into the room, and fairly forced Sydney to sit back down -- next to her sister. "Sit down, Sydney. We haven't seen you for a while. If you'll talk to Charity for a while and get her out of her present mood, then I'll fetch you some hot chocolate meanwhile . . . ." She went out of the room again, grinning at her sister behind Sydney's back. She very much wanted Charity to have some fun.

'Rita reentered the room, and handed Sydney a mug of hot chocolate, then another to Charity. She winked. "Now, sister, have you told this fine fellow about our plans?"

Charity blushed slightly, at the plans, not about the 'fine fellow', or at least she told herself that. "Not yet."

'Rita curtsied and excused herself. "Well, do. I must go be sociable."

Charity turned back to Sydney. "Oh, yes. My father is sailing on one of his ships, and is taking 'Rita to France to study. She wants me to come also, but I have not decided. While they are sailing, they will visit other places, too. America and the Indies . . . I know not what else."

Charity paused a moment before continuing.
"I'm having a hard time deciding wether or not I should go. I've never traveled before, and this would be a perfect opportunity for me to see other places, but I'll be so far away from home for so long..." her voice trailed off as her mind wandered off, thinking about her choices.
After a moment she came back to reality.
"Just for the sake of the moment, what do you think I should do?"

Sydney didn't really know how to answer, and he paused for a while. "Well -- "

Charity's father walked into the room, smiling towards his daughters. He picked up a glass of wine from a sideboard and held up. "A toast -- to my daughters 'Rita and Charity!"

"A toast!" everyone replied, and drank.

'Rita stood easily and returned the toast, "A toast to Captain Munroe and his excellent health!"

The room dissolved into laughter. "A toast to Munroe!"

"And a toast to his wonderful guests," she added.

"A toast!" the room was full of laughter. "And a toast to Christmas!" someone else said, and everyone complied, applauding.

"Welcome, guests! After we have our dinner, we shall have a dance -- a proper one. Gentlemen, take your last look for a long while of my daughter 'Rita, who sails with me in less than a week for France."

There was a murmur.

"And my other daughter, Charity is yet undecided. Just in case, keep her busy dancing." There was a laugh.

'Rita danced, of course, she was a lady. She was also aware that men liked her as a good friend and confidante but not in love. For a long time this had been 'all right' with her, but she couldn't help but envy her sister a little, who had plenty of men swarming around her 24/7. Still, she would survive, and 'Rita had no intention of marrying soon anyway -- even though she was considered old to be unmarried.

Quickly, she excused herself from the dancing and returned to her almost-finished glass. Silently, she raised a toast to her sister's independance and then walked to the door, her linen/silk skirt brushing the floor. She had great hopes to become her own person on the voyage, and to learn to survive alone, without need for anyone. Independance was her aim, whatever else her father or family might have in mind.

'Rita's eyes followed a ship leaving the harbor. How long would it be until she saw this harbor again? Maybe never, maybe forever.
