The steam tunnels are an urban legend about this kid who supposedly went psycho and killed fellow gamers. It didn't actually happen; the police reports are fascinating, and more than a little disturbing. Basically, there's a crazy lady who made this up rather than accept her son's problems. Apparently, this guy's dad went to the college where it "happened". You'd think he'd have heard the real story, but I guess the hysteria won out.

As an interesting point, someone raised the alleged Roleplaying=>suicide link earlier in the thread. That is actually true......to a point. You see, the figures used to attempt to prove the link are accurate, but are badly misrepresented. Yes, the number of teenagers who play roleplaying games and suicide is above the American national average for suicides in the population as a whole, but what is intentionally ommitted is this: The rate of suicides among roleplaying teens is exactly that of teens as a whole. It is just that teens are more likely as an age-group to commit suicide as a whole, regardless of D&D.

I am a parent, and a Pastor ... doowd, I love rpg's. My kids bought me another for Christmas last month. I read several good suggestions from others in this thread there is one thing I would add. It will take time to help your parents come to a place where they stop making emotional kneejerk reactions and start making intelligent informed decisions. You can help them grow in this way by giving them space. Don't respond over emotionally to their concerns, and lead them to other adults (in person or written) who offer balance opinions on the subject matter (some were mentioned in earlier posts).

BTW, Lord of the Rings is an AWESOME game.

Yes. D&D was a big deal back in the 80s. I marvel at the campaign of lies and mistruth that went into badmouthing that game. So that's what you're up against.
Meanwhile, your parents do mean well, but try to see it from their end and what they've had thrown at them.

Another game that's fun is Star Wars. When we would get tired of D&D we'd play that and it's a blast.

Good luck with your parental diplomacy skills.
