• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This might sound odd, but does anyone else panic when you get way too hot? I cannot stand being hot and 99% of the time when I am overheated I panic. Sometimes all I have to do is cool down, and my heart stops pounding and I feel less desperate.

I think this is because getting too hot has some of the same physical symptoms as panic. When you get too hot your heart pounds, you can feel dizzy and sick to your stomach, etc.

What do you guys think?

Blessings to all,
Hope

It's helped a lot to keep a fan in my room. Getting too hot also aggravates my asthma. Which also leads to panic because not much makes me more anxious than not feeling well. Even though I understand what is happening to my body it's still scary. And that also ties into the heat thing because when I am too hot I definitely don't feel very good.

I also get alot of anxiety when I am not feeling well.
I don't think that I've ever had being overheated cause anxiety, but alot of different things can send me into anxiety attack. People can have alot of different things that trigger anxiety for them. Plus, it can all be kind of a vicious cycle because like you said, panic mimicks some physical symptoms caused by other things. Since you said that heat aggravates your asthma, that makes sense, because when I feel my heart start beating abnormally, I immediately get anxiety, because I'm afraid something is going to happen w/ that. So I can see where feeling overheated would trigger some anxiety having to do with your asthma.
The fan thing helps my anxiety too.

((((hugs)))) Hope your anxiety lessens for you.

I find it works both ways, sort of against each, the more anxiety the hotter I get, and then I get all stressed about being red in the face and when I can feel the sweat trickle down my neck. LOL!
that was how I was in church this morning, new church for us so I was stressed out.

I too, will get panic/anxiety attacks when I've very warm... I'm not a sun seeker in the summer time, but just sitting on my deck on a hot day will cause panic symptoms... Even if I'm too hot in the car.... I think the post above hit it right on the head..... feeling hot does remind us of panic attacks... it seems neverending......

That used to happen to me all the time. I hated summer, because when I got too hot, I'd panic. Personally, I think you've hit the nail exactly on the head. I think the sensations of being hot are so similar to the sensations of starting to get anxious that it triggers the panic response if you are primed for it.

One thing that helped me tons with that was doing aerobic exercising regularly. That also causes the same sensations that being overheated and anxiety cause, and if you can learn to interpret them differently while you are exercising, as healthy things for your body to be doing, then it is easier to interpret them differently when you are hot.

Good luck!

Exactly! My doctor told me to do aerobic exercises so I would get familiar with the feelings of being anxious, but not be in the middle of an anxiety attack.

I'm not too bad with getting hot, but if I am out of my house somewhere and I start feeling warm, I'll start feeling anxious. In my mind, I'm afraid that if I get too hot, I'll pass out. It's never happened and medically it can't happen, but it's still a fear. lol I'm working my way past it though, but it takes a lot of time and patience.

I have had panic attacks for about 24 years, yes, getting over heated brings them on and yes the shower, isn't that odd, I didn't know anyone else had the shower thingy, lol.

Once the brain center that is activated by a stressful situation clicks in hyperdrive it is nearly impossible to deactivate it,always get help soon after panic disorder starts, when I first started having panic attacks little was known about them.

Getting help soon is most important.
