Her clout is with the media. She's the face of the republican party, CNN/MSNBC/FOX have made sure of it. It is similar to Paris hilton, actually--what the heck is paris hilton famous for anyway?

the only reason she has clout with the republicans is because she has name recognition and the name recognition for other republicans is so low. Take the average republican, they've all heard of Sarah Palin because the media covers her every twitter post like she's the second comming.

Some republicans like her, some don't, the ones who don't are labeled "moderates" and ostracized-- and most* of these rank and file republicans haven't even heard of other republicans who actually hold elected office and yet get almost no press at all.

*(I don't include people on this forum, by the way, IMO people on this forum, conservatives included, tend to be far more informed than the average).

And i don't agree with that actually -- at least to this extent:

She doesn't play to the base better than any other republican-- the difference is disproportionate media attention.

The problem is this: if Sarah Palin spouts some typical claptrap like (from a random article i googled from CNN): "Last State Twitter. Thank You Alaska! God Bless Alaska. God Bless the USA." She gets headline news by all of the MSM. If any other republican said this (and they all say stuff like this daily) -- it's not reported -- but with Sarah Palin her twitter feed is practically breaking news.

On top of that you've got the defensive mindset of the low-info voter who's bought into all of the hype, and if you attack her then you must disagree with "God bless america" so you must either hate God or hate america or both--People are dumb. I wouldn't say that the coverage of palin is overwhelmingly positive it's actually probably more negative than positive, yet there will always be people who will tune out all of the negative stuff.

But at the same time-- most other politicians do not get this kind of media coverage--negative or positive (Barack Obama, even before he was president, being a major exception). Remember, she was an almost complete unknown before John McCain picked her as VP, and there are probably 100s of other complete unknowns he could have picked that are just as savvy politicians as Palin.

IMHO, The only thing Sarah Palin has going for her is this massive obsession with her by the MSM.

Possibly -- but a closer race would've shown that the GOP was more in touch with its constituency.

And yet there were a lot of traditionally Dem seats that fell to the GOP.

We all saw that coming -- everybody knew the Dems were going to get hammered in the midterm elections -- Palin or no Palin.

If you look at the candidates that Palin actually campaigned for, they did better than those supposed conservative one's that she didn't.

I looked -- I didn't see a difference -- No seats changed hands with Palin's endorsement which wouldn't have changed anyway.

Contrary to what you might think, Reid is actually more popular than you think. I watched a Frank Luntz segment when he talked to them. And it was widely divergent. What shocked me was that the local head of the Republican Black Caucus openly admited to voting for Reid. She's not crazy about him, but he brings home the bacon.

And Angle doesn't.

He has a lot of power and influence and Nevadan's hated to lose that.

Or maybe they just thought he was the better choice -- the local head of the Nevada Black Caucus seemed to think so.

It's the same way with my area many years ago. I'm in the 5th Dist. of WA. We had the Speaker of the House, Tom Foley for years. I even voted for him just to keep in power. But one day the voters woke up and decided that all these earmarks are part of the problem. And so we voted him out. Nevada, CA and MA aren't there yet.

But if the GOP/Tea Party were so sure they were going to take the Senate, Reid would've been out anyway.

LOL! That is like putting the sheep to work with the wolves. After all it was the Republicans that are responsible for the economic crisis in the first place; like 1 billion $ per day for the Iraq war, Deregulating the banks, etc.

Sarah Palin has clout with republicans because she can draw crowds and raise a lot of money. Add to that the fact that her endorsement can often move you to the front of the political line and you have someone with clout. What she lacks is credibility in regard to her own political aspirations. If she took herself off the list of potential presidential contenders, that credibility would grow. She has found her niche, and if she is smart, she will stay doing exactly what she is doing.

And yet we still have regulating bodies.... Gosh if we got rid of all that regulation wonder what they are doing there?

Oh yeah that's right... there's still regulating of the banks going on.

That's because the right is in general, less educated, less intelligent, and more religious. Less education means you don't bother to really investigate candidates well, and you just support them because they stand up for Christian morality (or what they believe is Christian morality, which in this country is more like hating everyone who isn't the same as them).

When you believe the Earth is 6,000 years old, dinosaurs walked with man, and gays are demonic spawns of Satan, do you really think voting for a woman who believes Afghanistan is our neighboring country is that much of a stretch?
