• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I was just thinking about self injury and some of the ways it plays out for me. Does anyone else have the experience of injuring yourself in ways other than physical? I don't know if this is out of bounds for this forum, but I am curious to see if self injuring behavior is limited to the physical realm for most people.

Mental self harm is the worst one there is, it leads to actual physical self harm,
To shudder at youself in the mirror,
To hear yourself constantly call youself stupid.

Everyone else around you tells you that you need more confidence....but the mindset stands in the way|!
Lets face it none of us would self harm if we loved ourselves inside out and had good self image

I am still going through this battle it is hard when media tell you that you look wrong, and status symbols such as cars and fancy jobs mean more than personalities
and yet when we think about it we know that they are truly in the wrong...we just have to get over the fact that society has gone crazy and the media have caused it

There are ways I am trying to beat it
But when all is said and done experiences make us stronger, someday we will be able to help others with the knowledge of what we have suffered and what worked with us may work with them.

yes, i most definitely engage in additional forms of si. mental and emotional are two that come to mind right now. i will tell myself lies and believe stupid things about myself that really injure me both emotionally and psychologically. i find that those habits turn into lingering scars that are very hard to rid myself of....at least with the physical scars i can put cream on them or cover them with make-up. the emotional and psychological ones just callous up and remain.

Yes. I think I understand what you mean. All I will really go into is that before I realized I was called to be single and that was fine and actually got happy with it, I tended to date not-very-nice men. Over and over. Because I didn't find myself worthy of anything better. I believe it was a form of self-injury and was probably more destructive than anything physical I could have done to myself.

I guess if you count sexual abuse as a form of SI. I sometimes poke myself to the point of hurting myself down there. Don't know why other than replaying a forgotten memories of childhood sexual abuse from relatives and dad's friends. Like I have a need to punish myself. But it is easier to talk about cutting or burning that anything sexual.

i started smoking about nine months after god took away my physical si addiction....partly because i was overwhelmed with, first of all, stopping si and secondly with falling in love, planning a wedding, getting married, moving 1,000 miles away, settling into a new life, finding a job, preparing for college!

in any case, i also did it because, stupidly yet so typical to the sickened mind, i knew it is harmful and took it on as a new form of injury to myself. i am glad i didn't get involved with drugs and i'm glad to say i'm in the process of stopping the cigarettes but when this topic of other si methods came up it reminded me of this too, in addition to my aforementioned methods of emotional and psychological abuse.

yes, it can include other ways, such as putting yourself down. I won't get into all of the other forms, because I don't think THAT would be acceptable at all. But yeah, people with depression often do deal with more than just physical SI, but mental torture also. Very common stuff and much less noticable.

I've read about this before and a few have spoken to me about it as well.
