Hello! Is anyone here from Austria? I was wondering because I will be studying in Vienna for a semester next fall/winter...and I'm absolutely dying to go there! Just looking at some pictures, it's such a beautiful place...I'm especially looking forward to being there during the Christmas holiday, I have read about how Christmas is celebrated there and it seems so awesome. What are some of the best places to go in Austria? What are some of the best times of the year?

I'm also looking to brush up on mein Deutsch...I took two years during high school, but unfortunately, a lot of that knowledge has seemed to disappear. So don't mind me stopping by and asking questions about German. I've heard that theres some differences between the Austrian dialect and the more northern one...how noticable a difference is there?

Hi there

I'm one of the few Austrians registered here I'm really glad to hear that you like my country that much

I live in the south-east...in the second biggest town of Austria called Graz...we do have a very pretty town center (very old and belonging to the cultural world heritage )

what to do and have a look at in Austria....I think there's something for every season...depending on what you like...

especially around Vienna...you can have a look at all the beautiful old buildings in the city center...and go shopping in the Mariahilfer Strasse and maybe visit the Naschmarkt (kind of international market taking place every day as far as I know)....and when it is warm enough you can go a little outside the town to the Wienerwald and go for a walk there....it's especially beautiful in spring when the flowers start growing and in Autumn when the leaves are falling (and maybe you find some mushrooms there)....in summer you can go to the Donauinsel for bathing or just relaxing - it's the place to go during summer in Vienna...they also have festivals there....
and in winter you can visit the Christkindlmarkt and go ice skating in the city...or drive to the mountains for skiing....

if you want to go a little further of I really recomend going to the Neusiedlersee for bathing (though it's not that deep) or cycling...or having a glass of wine - the wine there is really good

or you can go to Salzburg for a little sight seeing....

as for the language: people in vienna kind of have their own dialect which could give you some troubles but I'm sure you'll get used to it soon....they are not as hard to understand as the Austrians not living in Vienna since their dialect is a little more like standard German....the only thinmg really special about Viennese dialect is that they use a lot of ur- in front of words like for instance urleiwand (meaning something is great)

what are you going to study in Vienna?

just post your questions here or ask me (don't hesitate to send me a pm)

be blessed <><

wow, you just made ainuhina very happy!

as she already said: don't hesitate to ask if you need more information about the country or other things like the language (I'd recomend you keep speaking high german, everybody will understand you and you can ask them to speak high german as well, so you won't have trouble to understand them)

Thanks everyone!

Ainuhina, thank you so much for the very informative post...seems like there are lots of things to do in and around Vienna! I've heard of the Christkindlmarkt before, I remember watching a video about Austria in my German class...that name definately rings some bells.

I'm going to be studying political science during my stay in Vienna. After that, I hope to enter law school and major in either international law or constitutional law...maybe work with the government or a special interest group.

The main reason I'm going to Vienna/Austria is because I've always wanted to. At least, I've always wanted to go to Germany, Austria or der Schweiz...I have lots of family roots back in that area (mostly from E. Germany) and my parents and grandparents have always taught me to be proud of my heritage. I remember doing my first big report on Austria, back in the sixth grade...I don't think I have it anymore, unfortunately, but I wrote a big 60 page paper all about the economy, history, cities, and everything else...my grandmother took a trip to Germany earlier that year, so she sent me packets and booklets and all kinds of information about Austria she amassed while visiting Germany. So all that kind of stuff, like seeing the Alps and the beautiful cities and stuff was cemented into my mind, I suppose.

Anyways, once again thank you for the kind welcomes, and I will definately start to ask questions when I take up my study of the German language again Thank you all again so much!
