Without turning this into a debate, the word "Elohim" is a plural.

Yah talks of Himself as a plural unity.

Not a debate but in thread 2, the word to the right of what is circled means 'elohiym means G-d, don't it? I was asking what His name is in Hebrew in Genesis 1:1, not debate the Trinity. I looked it up in a Strongs Concordance. Too bad you couldn't translate the whole verse in English from Hebrew. Sorry.

In Genesis 1:1, Both the title/function of "ET" (the Alef Tav) and the name/title "Elohim" are functioning and present.

Elohim is a word/title that means our G-d (also used is "el") as well as in some instances other (false) idols that men worship as gods.

It's a functioning singular-plural. if that makes any sense.

In John 1:1 We are told "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was G-d and the Word was with G-d, and nothing that was created was created without Him".

That "Word" (Memra in aramaic, D'var in hebrew, or also Alef Tav) is a representative of Messiah from the get-go... as is just the word "Elohim"

In the beginning created God with the Heavens and with the lands ( earth or Israel).

I'm only just learning Hebrew and this is my attempt at a literal word for word translation of Gen 1:1 from the Margolin edition Torah. Maybe it helps? Oh, and hopefully someone can point out if I have incorrectly translated any words!

* The reason 'Shin' means 'El Shaddai' is because Shin is the first letter in 'Shaddai', and is used as the symbol for God's name in Judaica. The front of a mezuzah will have the 'shin' prominantly displayed.


While in its ancient form it takes the picture of a tooth, which is correct... it also has come to symbolically signify Shaddai, the name of God.. being placed in every Jewish household near the doorway.

There are many meanings to all of the letters.

I will open another thread a little later with the re sources I have (at least some of them).

FYI - the Margolin edition has incorporated alot of Rashi understanding into the text. If you find yourself trying to translate and it is not lining up too well - that might be the reason why Not always but there are a few spots it will make a difference.

Shin is also the letter on the Mezuzah.

I read it a little differently, I did a drash on this. Anyway,

B'resheet bara Elokim, et hashamayim ve et ha aretz.

Literally:

In beginning created Elohim ( not El here, indicating Yeshuas presence) the heavens (actually the waters above) and the land.


This is interesting regarding Alef Tav ='et'

et - et hashamayim ve'et ha'aretz - the heavens and the earth
Whenever the word et appears it adds something to the meaning of the plain text.

Peshat:
The two words et here are meant to convey that two additional matters or raw materials were involved in the creation of heaven and earth. According to the plain meaning we understand the two words as references to the two different raw-materials (elements) G-d employed when creating heaven and earth, seeing the two are obviously not made of the same material. This is the mean of "the earth was tohu vavohu" i.e., that after the initial act of creation earth was still in a chaotic state. The specific meaning of the two words is that the material tohu was covered with a form bohu.
This is what is meant by Yeshayahu 66:2. The first three words in that verse refer to existing material, whereas the last words "my hands have fashioned," refer to G-d supplying this material with distinctive form tzurah. According to this verse in Yeshayahu, G-d first created the raw material, bara, but subsequently His activities consisted only of refining such raw material by acts of yetzirah respectively beriah, creation of matter, consisted of merely creating the smallest physical particle, a nekudah (a point) something barely perceptible. This little particle formed the beginning of the entire solar system.

Remez:
The number of planets is 955 corresponding to numerical value of the word hashamayim (the final letter

[mem] is considered as equivalent to 600). Our Sages say that at the time G-d descends from the celestial regions, i.e. from 955 heavens, and He seats Himself on the throne commensurate with His glory, all these heavens as well as the gateways recite the verse, "lift up your gates your heads..." (Tehillim 24:9)
In Derech Eretz Rabbah we find that, "G-d is the solitary Ruler in the celestial regions, His Name is One, and he resides in the 390 heavens" (the numerical equivalent of the word shamayim). Each one of these heavens has been stamped with His Name, a Name which has been alluded to in the Torah (Devarim 32:1)ha'azinu hashamayim "hearken the Heavens."
Drash:
The extra words et in the phrase "heaven and earth" include the sun, moon, stars in the word shamyim and the entire range of vegetation in the word eretz.

I've found some other things but don't want to derail this from alef-tav.

Does any one know of any web sites that list all of the scriptures that the Alef Tav appear in. I just learned about this a couple of weeks ago and am fascinated by it........wondering what other verses have it in them. Thanks! Wish I could read Hebrew.

It's in a ton of places, but no, I have not yet seen a site that shows them.

However, if you download E-sword (free) www.e-sword.net you can look for them yourself and find them just like I have both in my Tanakh as well as in E-sword.

There are a couple of teachers right now in the movement that are talking about it a little bit. Maybe in the next few months once I get moved and have a stable internet connection and a scanner, I can do that just for ya'll

Another great help is if you have Green's Interlinear Bible. You can find it in there too.

So Alef Tav isn't in the Shema? How often do Jews or Messianic Jews suppose to recite the Shema? Like Sabbaths, holidays, and at Bar Mitvahs and weddings? Thanks for writing the Shema out. I paid more attention to the different names of G-d and the times His name is in it. Am I alittle off the thread subject?

Yep, the Aleph Tav are in the shema 8 times, the number of regeneration and new beginnings.

The Shema is said twice daily, Once in the morning and once in the evening, and also on Shabbat and the holy days at services.

If you go for the morning and evening prayer times at most synagogues you will hear the Shema being said.

The Shema is also one of the last things a Hebrew will want to have on their lips as they died; hence the reason during the Pogroms in Europe and Russia, as well as the Crusades and the Holocaust that so many marched to their deaths reciting the Shema.

The Shema is said at least 3 times and for many folks 4

Once at each service: shakrit (morning), minkha afternoon) and maariv (evening), and also at bedtime - you will even find The Bedtime Shema in your standard Siddur
