My tastes are extremely ecclectic as well. . .

I sent this e-mail the other day after being asked, and posted it in my journal. . .

Everybody, and it does seem to be EVERYBODY, wants to know what other music I listen to besides Lost And Found! I can't blame them, though I do listen to other stuff and even post said things in my journal at times!
Well, of course, there are a lot of other Lutheran musicians or Christian muscians, but I'm certain that those are a bit obvious. Though, I can be quite picky even though my tastes are probably "a bit of everything!"
I was raised on GOLDEN OLDIES and FOLK SONGS!
Those Lutheran musician often play songs that I KNOW. Yeah, the others are probably going "who?" while I'm going "oh, great song," even when I don't know the artist!
I'm not too good at matching up artists and songs.
Awhile ago, I "inherited" my dad's vinyl collection. If you could see it. . .
Yep, that's right, my dad gave me the vinyls and the piano. . .
I listen to oldies and 80s. Oldies more. Some contemporary, but not too many. . .and some country. . .and I also like comedy!
I'm not really into rap, but I love Agape (yeah, I know, Lutheran musician)!
So, I listen to Beatles, Beach Boys, Steppenwolf, Kingston Trio, Peter Paul and Mary, Abba, CCR, Elton John, The Jayhawks, Golden Smog, Alan Jackson, Jimmy Buffett, Letters to Cleo, The Randy Bandits, Lisa Loeb, Neil Diamond, Neil Young, Barry Manilow, The Arrogant Worms (the RCMP rocks!), Weird Al Yancovic, Ray Stevens, Joshua Kadison (so many people forget this guy and I've always love "Jesse" and "Picture Postcard from L.A." and was thrilled to find a CD at a garage sale many years ago), and many little artists meaning I don't remember the name until I see it and get excited. . .and so many artists names I just don't remember!
Then, there's some classical and stuff like Zuill Bailey. . .
And of course, all this Christian stuff. . .I'm picky about what it says and how it is used. It's the Lutheranism. . .
I like a lot of "old school" Christian music - late 80s and early 90s Jars of Clay, DC talk, AValon, etc. . .
Then, there's some others. I'm not a fan of Superchic[k], though they are quite talented and their songs aren't bad. I love "One Girl Revolution." I think there's at least one other song that I know that I love.
However, if wanting that type of sound, I tend to listen to ZOEgirl and Daniel's Window.
Yes, it took me awhile to register "Daniel's Window" after the first time I saw them (Oct. 2004) and then it clicked. . .I remembered "Daniel, Darius, and DeLion" that we performed when I was a youth!
So, now you know!

I don't believe in "cocooning" either but, there is just somethings that I just can NOT reconcile to my Christian lifestyle.

This doesn't mean that I never listen to secular music. I LOVE secular music as well as Christian music.

I guess it's more, I don't want to support those who make a career out of denigrating others.

Of course YMMV and all that.

You can also find her singing with the bluegrass group Union Station. I believe she did a couple songs for the soundtrack of "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" like "Let's Go Down to the River to Pray" or something.

I guess that's my issue with groups / artists that make a living out of selling hate-speech and foul language. I'm not worried they'll influence me, but if I purchase their music, I've just informed them, with my dollars, that what they say is just fine with me. I can't do that, so I don't listen to their work.

Well yes, but my post was mostly in response to whoever it was (sorry...I can't find it offhand) that said that they'll buy Eminem and other hate-speechers and just not listen or not worry about it because the Hate-speechers won't influence him/her.
I don't believe in cocooning myself away from the world, because quite frankly we can't. But I also don't agree with turning over my hard-earned money to someone who makes a living spouting a philosophy that is entirely anathema to me. I can't and won't buy their CDs/ tapes/whatever, because that's telling them "hey, whatever you say is all right with me."
You're right, though - we need to really see what the words are saying before condemning a song just because the title seems "wrong" or whatever. Oftentimes the message of the song is ENTIRELY different from what we think it will be.

Could've been me, though that's not exactly what I said, and I could've expanded on it. Eminem I'll buy despite his issues because he's such an exceptional talent. Part of the reason I'm not worried about him influencing me is that I drop his most hateful songs from my playlist. Would I buy other hip-hop artists with the same message? No. There are no others as talented as he is. Though I normally would pass on someone like that, he's simply too good an artist to not have in my collection, so he gets to be an exception. OTOH, the Dixie Chicks are good, but there are plenty of other country artists just as good who don't hate their country, so I don't buy them.

In principle I agree with that. But if I followed it consistently, it would mean I couldn't see a movie with Alec Baldwin in it, because of his politics. And not just him, but any of the other loud but ignorant America-hating Hollywood lefties, and they are legion. Well, I do take that into account when deciding, but if the movie is good enough, I'll probably go anyway.

Very true. It's important to know what we're talking about before we judge. Not just in picking entertainment either: I know a pastor who lost a couple good potential parishioners because he judged their lifestyle. Well, maybe he couldn't do otherwise given his very conservative beliefs - but he was mistaken about what their lifestyle was. He went by surface indications, and didn't check it out first. Oops!

Way cool! There are even some Christian ministries that use hip-hop to reach inner city youth, and that's working very well. I'll post links if I run across them.

Actually, that song is about life on the road touring with a rock band.
