• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I would suggest NOT to lower or stop your lexapro unless your doctor tells you so. They are knowledged in this, and know how to do it. I've been on lexapro for 3 years, and there have been times where I've felt like I didn't need it. Once on a trip to London, I forgot my medication, so when I returned two weeks later, I just thought I would quit taking it. A few months later, I started to feel depressed again. There is a way to get off of it, but its about lowering the dosage slowly. Ask your doctor if you can start to lower it, he will know if you are ready.

I have been thinking of discontinuing the Lexapro that I have been taking. I can't see any difference that results from taking it. Is there a safe way without headaches to stop taking it?

I second what dworkin stated, consult your doctor and therapist if you have one. Do not just think you can stop.

I third what they've said. Don't just stop it on your own; talk to your psych or therapist first. I was on it for about three months, and it didn't do me any good, so my psych just took me off it, *snap* like that. There wasn't any lowering of the dosage or anything, at least not that I can remember. And I didn't have any problem with that.

But please, let someone know that you're considering quitting it, and they can talk with you about the pros and cons and what other med you could go on instead.

Thanks. I don't have a therapist. I have used counseling before, but not this time. I have gone down to half my dosage of Lexapro. I don't know if I will completely stop or not. I am not really suicidal or anything like that. I was just feeling kinda down for a long time. Lots of changes in my life this past year too.

One problem with some doctors is that they won't listen to you when you say you want to know how to safely get off a medication. It is your mind and body and I think if a person asks them how to get off a medication, they should inform the person of the risks, but still tell them how to get off safely so that the person doesn't try to get off the medicine on their own and end up hurting themselves.

So, if you are going to a doctor that won't help you get off the medicine, try and try again until you get one who will help.

I had a doctor who refused to help me get off adderall and welbutrin, even though I kept telling her that I was worried about being on that medicine and why. I didn't go off it because I did not know how and I later ended up in the hospital with a drug induced psychosis. The doctors there told me that I shouldn't have been on the combination of those drugs at the dosages that I was taking them and that it was the drugs that caused me to hallucinate, be paranoid, confused, etc.

I have been off all antidepressants for almost two years now and since I have not experienced anything like that before it happened or afterwards, I think they were right. If my doctor had just listened to my concerns and taken my seriously, I probably would have never gone through that.

Thanks for all the post. I have decided to go off gradually. Last week I went down from 20 to 10 mg and this week it is half of that. I am trying to be careful because I got bad headaches last time I went off pretty quickly.
