OCP's New P&W Hymnal

Hey -- all you Catholics involved in Music, Retreats and Youth ministries -- I recently received an email from OCP (Oregon Catholic Press) that they are publishing a hymnal many have long been waiting for -- and it will be available next month. I am personally aware they have been thinking of making this huge step for the last ten years as they were diologuing with Don Moen, founder of Hosanna! Integrity (praise & worship music) back then. Took them a while!

Well, yes it does. The OCP board of directors approves everything before it's published.

I am not the deciding factor on what is a fully Catholic song...but I've seen some of the things that OCP has put out before, and some of it has been questionable at best.

Nope, but if I had to guess, he's not examined all of the songs on the list. He's probably delegated the task to others. To suggest that because he's on the board, he has personally read through all 200 songs is a bit silly in my opinion, but hey...

Name some, please, and give me a reason why you don't think it belongs in a book of music to be used in the Catholic Church. Because we've been using OCP for many years, and my Pastor is very knowledgable and wouldn't let us use something that is not "Liturgically Correct".

i'm calm. i'm sorry if i came off as not calm. I was really asking how you define "Fully Catholic" i could well agree with you or discuss your criteria with you. Personally i find including Martin Luther's A Mighty Fortress in catholic hymnals a bit strange. but i love a lot of black sprituals. Again i would love to know what the criteria for fully Catholic songs is

No, it's not silly. And if they have to go through 200 songs, they will go through 200 songs. Even if they have to go through 2,000 or 2 million in order to get a book of music together, they will. Don't think that anything is done half "baked" ( I would use another workd, but it wouldn't get by the censors)

We use OCP also We currently have Breaking Bread 2005

Some of the songs, more than likely, are those which could be sang by any Christian group of people, but do not have anything in them that would go against Catholic Doctrine.
Tom Booth wrote a beatiful song/prayer to Mary entitled "Lady in the Night".
Let's see if I can remember the words...heh...

Edit in: This song could probably, if it's in the hymnal, be used for use on a feast day for our Blessed Mother as the offeratory hymn (or whatever it's called during collection...I can't remember the names of anything ).

If the Archbishop deligated the task of making sure the songs were theologically correct i would assume he delegated that authority to a knowledgeable person who he trusts so in the end if he says the book is good then even if he didn't read all the songs he is sure they are good cause he had someone he trusted read them.

sure...how about the song "Ashes", which OCP has published. From:
