  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Diners report seeing Virgin Mary in food griddle
Diners report seeing Virgin Mary in food griddle

CALEXICO, Calif. – The hottest thing on the griddle at the Las Palmas restaurant these days isn't the food — it's the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe that a cook says she saw on the griddle.
Restaurant manager Brenda Martinez says more than 100 people have flocked to the small town of Calexico on the California-Mexico border to gaze at the likeness of the Virgin Mary since it was discovered as the griddle was being cleaned.
Among the awe-struck was a group of masked Mexican wrestlers who arrived Thursday for an exhibition at a nearby swap meet.
One, known as Mr. Tempest, says: "This is amazing. It's a true miracle."
Since the discovery, the griddle has been taken out of service and placed in a shrine in a storage room.

it is a greese stain, it is silly and not a miracle, but if it brings people closer to Christ is it a bad thing?
I am not sure how making a stained griddle into a shrine brings anyone closer to Christ.
Closer to the griddle perhaps.
Closer to the grease perhaps.
But beyond that - ....

it gets people thinking about spiritual things, gets people thinking about Jesus and His Mother.
Anything, even something as silly as a greese stain, that reminds people of Our Lord and His Mother in such a secular world is a good thing in my book

even though many Catholics hang our heads in shame when something like this hits the news

It's most likely a grease stain.
I agree.
Is this an attempt to discredit the Catholic faith because someone has this griddle?
I hope not.

I think most all, if not all of these kinds of images just occur naturally.
But who I am to say how they came to be?
These images bring some closer to Jesus and the Virgin Mary, I think that is a good thing.
