I'm not exactly "unequally yoked". But there's a little background: I was raised in a Christian home, accepted Christ at an early age, even studied in college for the ministry and was ordained. However, I eventually left the faith because of my own doubts. Now I am coming back to Christ, but a lot has happened in the interim: I got married and had kids.
My wife and children and I attend a Seventh-Day Adventist Church (that's her background). The Church has some nice people (don't they all?) but I really don't believe a lot of the "distinct" SDA doctrines. And guess what? She doesn't either! She has some fairly liberal views about religion as well. However, when I talk to her about changing Churches, she gets very unhappy. On top of that, she wants me to teach at Sabbath School, preach and give music specials. She even volunteered me to do this (which really, really upset me.) I told her that I don't want to be a hypocrite and teach and preach in a church that I fundamentally disagree with. (She has no reservations about teaching and preaching there, though). I told her that I'm willing to attend, but I do not want to teach, preach or anything else in a leadership role--especially when we turn right around and "violate the Sabbath" by eating out for lunch on Saturday. (I don't have a problem with it, but the SDA Church does. We don't 'properly observe' the Sabbath, eat 'unclean' foods and in general do not live an Adventist lifestyle.)
I'm really not interested in debating Adventist doctrine in this thread. Suffice it to say I do not believe, my wife does not believe it, but she wants us to attend. We tried going back to my childhood denomination for awhile (Restoration Church--Christian Church). I really enjoyed it, but my wife found every excuse to not go.
My marriage is not the healthiest (as you can tell.) She is a believer, but I feel as though religiously we are growing quite apart. My faith is growing, and I feel that her faith is growing in a different direction.
Any of you in a similar situation? I know I probably left out some important information, but anyone else encountered something like this? I really dread going to Church and cringe whenever I hear something that I believe is unbiblical. I hate the deception of wearing a smile and hear lessons about the Sabbath and then go out and 'violate' it (at least the Church would consider it a violation if they knew about it.)
