Same here. Half of my family (me included) covered the gambit from reserve to chief, and fire/EMT. As for targets, what ever I can get my hands on at the moment. 12 inch round or diamond paper at 100 yards. Old CAD drawings for shotgun patterns. Cans, stumps, and what ever is walking and legal game in the woods. But, I don't shoot steel as I don't have any. We used to idle along the bayou banks at night spotlighting swamp rabbits and bull frogs. Used my granddads .22 Winchester pump or the Ranger 101 410.
Didn't you know that we are all part of the militia on call to defend the United States in the case of an attack!? But seriously, even though we don't live in an earthquake prone area it is still possible that something local could happen and be so catastrophic that you can't get home immediately. As part of emergency response services I have been directly involved in hurricanes, train wrecks, highway shut downs, tornadoes and other inclement weather incidents and this is just part of being prepared. When I say a couple of weeks of ammo I don't mean shooting constantly. I mean a handful vs 2 or 3 rounds. You never know what is going to happen and you might be the only person available to depend on.This is why I ask what the protection is for. Maybe the zombie apocalypse was foreseen.....This would be helpful information as oppose to just stating that everyone should place the means to gun down a multitude in their cars..
Ya, looking at that car in the photo doesn't exactly inspire me to jump on that idea. Just sayin.The 1989 the Loma Prieta magnitude 6.9 quake in California did $6B in property damage. Happening in a city with a strong community infrastructure helped, but a lot of people who left for work that morning had no idea they would never see their belongings again. Many were left to fend for themselves for weeks or months so it if you can do it, make sure you have enough in your vehicle to sustain you and or your family for at least several days until you can get back on your feet. A couple of gallons of water, some energy bars, a backup firearm with some ammo, even toilet paper will become valuable.

I just found the photo "interesting" shall I say.It's a good idea to spread your guns, food, blankets, etc. in several places.
My wife and I were in that earthquake, but our stuff was undamaged.

Back on topic LOL...This weekend I picked up a .17 HMR from Rossi just so I would have the caliber to play with and see if it was all that they say it is. I am limited to 100 yards with my .22 magnum and thought why not see if it is worthwhile to reach out to 200 or so yards since I am moving to Colorado soon. Prairie dogs, beware!
I have a backup carry, rifle, and shotgun in my truck. I carry a 9mm Taurus and a Rossi .22/410 combo. Well, I got to church the other day and realized I had not holstered my .45 Springfield before leaving the house so I went back to the trunk and realized I didn't have ANY backup's in my car. Well, I remedied that real quick like. Got a .20/.223 Rossi Combo and my S&W .40 in there now. I recommend that everybody carries a backup in their vehicle if you can. I mean carry pistol, rifle, and shotgun. And enough ammo to last a couple of days.
I am glad you said that. I have Hornady, Winchester, and CCI to try in my new Rossi .17. I had just started to adjust the scope this past weekend but after only 11 shots it started raining so I had to hurry and put it up. I am looking forward to seeing which brand shoot best. Just those 11 shots and I am hooked. Something about the feel when it went off was so different from the .22 magnum. I like it!Back on topic LOL...
I had my CZ .17 out Sunday afternoon (ground hogs should be out in about a week or two) to verify sight in. I had some Winchester ballistic tip in 17 gr. and some Hornady HP XTP. The hornady shot great < 1 MOA at 100 yards; the Winchester was all over the place. When I was cleaning up I noticed that the necks of the Winchester brass; over 1/2 of them were split. None of the Hornady were. That explains a lot. No more Winchester ammo for me.
I posted on "Canadian Gun Nuts" to see what other's experiences with Winchester were; they all agreed. Hornady or CCI are better ammo.I am glad you said that. Is yours a single shot; combo of bolt action? We don't see much of Rossi up here anymore; I don't think the distributor is pushing them to hard to the dealers. There used to be a lot of combo guns, but now Chiappa seems to have the market share, and their stuff is not what I would call "pretty". I don't know if the Obama era shutdown on overseas guns did it or something else but the Rossi products dried up, especially on the Combos. I have a .22/410 combo and a .223/20ga, both single shot combos but those were bought through my pawn broker. I was blessed in that both were like new, especially the .223/20. I don't think either had ever been shot and the others had barely been, if at all. I carry one set in my truck and the other in my wifes car just for 'incase'. The .17 is a new build 5 rd bolt action and I am beginning to see more of the individuals and bolt actions, but no new combo's anywhere.Is yours a single shot; combo of bolt action?
