It's common among Latin American or Spanish-speaking Christians to name a male child "Jesus", but I've never ever heard of a non-Latin person named Jesus. Do any other peoples do this?

I'm not sure it matters considering that our Lord's name isn't really Jesus. In fact...if it was translated directly to English it would be Johsua.

Christ seems to be more popular among Greeks.

"Christos" is used as a first name? I've never come across that. Seems a little odd to me, like some English speakers who name a child with a title, such as "Judge" or "Major".

After posting this it occurred to me your name might be Christos or Kristos (duh). If so, no offense to you or anyone, I only meant "odd" as in uncommon or special.

I don't think so, but once I got a business card stuck on my front door and in BIG LETTERS it said CALL JESUS and then there was a phone number and a description and it was a lawn mowing service run by a guy named Jesus. It caught my attention.

The card should have said "Lo, I stood at the door and knocked..."

Jesus is also similar to the hebrew word used of "Joshua" in the OT/OC.

Exodus 17:9 And Mosheh is saying to Y@howshuwa` "choose thou! for us and go forth thee! fight! in `Amaleq. Tomorrow I being stationed on summit of the hill and rod of the Elohiym in hand of me"
.

True...but if we went directly from Hebrew to English would it not be 'Joshua'? Why not call him either by his real name...or the English name that comes directly from the Hebrew? Point is...Jesus isn't his name...and really isn't even the English version of his name...right?

TIA,
CC

I imagine for the same reason many Catholics name their girls "Mary" and boys "Joseph" or "Peter."

Many people name their child Jesus, Israel, Christian, etc...... it is a cultural done out of respect, I hope, by most.

The card should have said "Lo, I stood at the door and knocked..."

Like Joshua, I agree.

.
My oldest daughter is named Mary - and I am not nor ever was I Catholic - she is named after my mom, who was Jewish.
I had thought if I had two sons I could name them Peter and Paul, but since I did not have twins, could not be sure of having two sons.
Then I wanted to name my son Joseph - after my Mother in law's middle name - Josephine, but I decided it might not be proper to have my children named Mary and Joseph, so, we did not name him Joseph.

Yes, I used to know a guy who was Greek Orthodox named Christos.

John 1:41 Is finding this one first the brother the own Simon and is saying to him, "we have found the Messiah/messian <3323>"(which is being translated/interpreted the Christ/cristoV <5547>).

Textus Rec.) John 1:41 euriskei outoV prwtoV ton adelfon ton idion simwna kai legei autw eurhkamen ton messian o estin meqermhneuomenon o cristoV

3323. Messias of Hebrew origin (4899); the Messias (i.e. Mashiach), or Christ:--Messias.
4899 mashiyach maw-shee'-akh from 4886; anointed; usually a consecrated person (as a king, priest, or saint); specifically, the Messiah:--anointed, Messiah.
5547. Christos from 5548; anointed, i.e. the Messiah, an epithet of Jesus:--Christ.

5547 Christos from 5548; TDNT - 9:493,1322; adj
AV - Christ 569; 569
Christ = "anointed"
1) Christ was the Messiah, the Son of God 2) anointed

I think we call Him Jesus because of the way the Greeks wrote it, and the way it is spelled "Iēsoûs". Remember the New Testament was written in Greek.

Hebrew: Yehoshua
Aramaic: ישוע Yeshua
Greek: Ἰησοῦς Iēsoûs
Latin: Iesus

Yeshua, the real name of Jesus

True...but we don't speak Greek. Why not just use his real name...or the direct Hebrew to English translation? The Bible places a premium on names...so this is important...

"Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved"

Because the translation is from Greek to Latin to English and now it is from Greek to English. That's how the Greeks would call Him. And if I am not mistaken, since the Roman Empire was the dominating culture at the time, they would have spoken Greek and He would have spoken Greek (I believe He also spoke Aramaic and Hebrew) and that would be what people call Him. (I believe that Greek was the dominate language at the time).
