  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Well I have been reading some of his work and boy have I been impressed! If you have not read him yet then start with Creation and Covenant.

What in particular about Creation and Covenant impressed you? Do you think it would appeal more to board-members here of a particular churchmanship, or have across-the-board appeal? and why?

That's weird - apparently there are still problems with the board, as I did not start this thread, nor did I (intentionally) post twice in response to the OP from Iosias.

I haven't read Creation in Covenant, but I have read "Simply Christian", "Two Visions" (a dialogue with Marcus Borg) and parts of some of his other books.

The Lord and His Prayer
For All God's Worth
What St Paul Really Said
Following Jesus

New Testament and the People of God
and I'm half way through Jesus and the Victory of God

I've also listened to The Challenge of Jesus and most of the audio recordings available on www.ntwrightpage.com

I think the biggest issue was my suprise at how much I agree with him when he has been attacked so much from evangelicals of my own kind, so to speak. He views the gospel as the announcement that "Christ is Lord". I also like the point that we need to understand the story behind Scripture inorder to understand Scripture. That is, the NT was not written in a vacuum but is historical. I am slowly working my way through Paul: In Fresh Perspective from which "Creation and Covenant" comes.

I am also listening to his series "Romans in a Day":
God's Gospel, God's Son, God's Righteousness (30.1MB MP3)
New Exodus, New Creation, New Humanity (27.8MB MP3)
'All Israel' and the Church's Task (29.9MB MP3)

Do you think it would appeal more to board-members here of a particular churchmanship, or have across-the-board appeal? and why?

I think he will appeal to both evangelical and broad churchmanship because that is the group in which he is himself.

i emailed the bishop 3 or 4 years ago
he was going to speak at a church whose pastor helped found a movement (league of the south) that advocates seccession yet again
and who also found time to co-author a book about the happy lives of slaves,,, no kidding (rev stevie wilkins of the auburn ave church,, recently kicked out of their original denomination)

anyway, i sent him an email that was so deliberately over the top that i figured he would ignore it
had a blast writing it

he responded, said he didnt advocate their views etc

sort of went all obama on me now that i think about it

i was impressed by two things though

a) how considerate he was to respond in a considerate manner to what anyone else would have thought was an email from a crank (it was)

b) how clever i was to not only get his email address but to also get him to respond to one of my more nutty emails

Reading Tom Wright has really helped me to get a grip on the bible - I learn as much from just seeing how he thinks as from what he actually writes!
I would love to sit down with him and ask him questions though, because I think there are one or two loose ends with some some of his ideas. That's probably from a misreading on my part though, and he would no doubt have a devastatingly good answer to each of my queries!

In fact I just finished reading 'Surprised By Hope' and would recommend it highly.

Of course one of the problems with his writing is that he never has the space to say everything that he could say on an issue, and he is so good at taking you as far as he does have space for, that you are always ready for some more.

In fact I just finished reading 'Surprised By Hope' and would recommend it highly.
I'm looking forward to getting hold of a copy - next time I can justify and order from Melbourne it will be in it.
