Tonight, I was discussing with a group of people what "mission", "missions" or "missionary" means to them. It was rather interesting to hear people's differences in understanding of these terms.
We never came to a conclusion about the actual definition, though! (that wasn't the point of our discussion)

Now I'm curious about other people's opinions and thought I'd come see what you people think!

I've always thought of a missionary as someone who is called to move or visit a remote area and bring the Good News to people who may not have ever had the opportunity to hear it before... But really a missionary can be anyone... We can all be missionaries in our local communities... We don't have to travel to some far away land to share the Good News. Some are called to travel abroad and others are called to work on the mission field of their local community. Both are very important callings.

mission - [L. missio, a sending, sending away] a sending out or being sent out with authority to perform a special duty; specif., the sending out of persons by a religious organization to preach, teach and proselytize.

missionary - [ModL. missionarius] a person sent on a mission; specif., a person sent out by his church to preach, teach and proselytize, as in a foreign country considered heathen.

(It is important to always start with the definition of a word. Without objective definitions, language is meaningless. Discussing connotations without a solid knowledge and understanding of denotation is a dangerous road to travel.)

I am finding, more and more often, that the internet is my mission field. I would dearly love to be trained properly, and be armed with much more knowledge than I currently possess, as the Lord has led me on MANY ocassions recently to "minister" to the lost, and even a couple of non-believers.

Is that any less a mission field than, say, Costa Rica, or Afghanistan?

Missionaries to 3rd world countries still have to see to it their congregation is fed properly, cared for properly, and clothed properly. Sometimes there is more to missionary work than first meets the eyes. Some missionaries have established ways for the people to support and self-sustain themselves as they are preaching the Gospel. Hard workers they are, and brave too. It is good they will have a greater reward in Heaven.
