Hello everyone

I found this article and I find myself agreeing with the author.

https://themennonite.org/opinion/marriage-ceremonies-bible/

What do you think and why?
23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man." 24 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:24

Marriage began with Adam and Eve or perhaps more accurate monogamy was perfected in Adam and Eve. We had male and female before them but Adam and Eve were the first man and women. This was the beginning of monogamous relationships. We have the chemistry of mating in what is believed to be oxytocin and vasopressin.

With Abraham we have the Children of promise with Sarah and the children of the flesh with Hagar. We see today how the flesh and the spirit battle with each other. We see with Jacob, Rachel and Leah this same thing. He loved Rachel and when he was to be joined with her the father in law: "Laban gathered together all the men of the place and made a feast". Clearly he loved Rachel more than Leah yet we still see this battle between the spirit and the flesh.

In the Bible John 2:1-10 "And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee;" This is when Jesus turned the water into wine and we see that this is a type of the marriage that will take place between Jesus and His Bride on the THIRD day. This will be the thousand year reign of Christ when we will rule and reign with Him for 1,000 years.

The Bride must be cleansed in the Blood and this garment represents the flesh. So we must be holy, pure and sanctified before God. Then we will be able to dedicate our children to Him.

He's not correct that marriage as a legal matter began in the Middle Ages. Marriage as a legal matter began at least as early as Rome, which had legal requirements which are still part of our practice today (eg. the free consent of both members of the couple, and monogamy, were both Roman legal requirements which we have continued with long after Rome fell).

I went looking and found that the earliest Jewish marriage contract was found in the early 20th century. It was from the era of the Babylonian exile. (mid 500s bc)

Well, I'm just agreeing with his notion that social marriage is what happened in the Bible, so why do we make such a big deal about a church wedding. Where in the scripture does it say that it has to be like that and also why does a mutual agreement with both partners' consent not do as well? Why are people who are not married in a church seen as less committed and less welcome in churches?

These days - at least where I live - a church wedding is not seen as a big deal. In some circles a common-law marriage (one without the legal paperwork) is still seen as not a "real" marriage, but you're right that if we were to look at Biblical customs that's on shaky ground.

Possibly the main difference is that many common-law marriages don't actually have any real commitment to being for a lifetime.
