• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Many people think that drinking alcohol is having a good time. What is your response?

It all depends on who's doing the drinking. Did I have some good, happy times? Sure; but in the end what I learned wasn't pleasant. If you can control your drinking, enjoy! There may even be some health benefits. If you're like some of us here, be on notice: it's all downhill with no brakes; and the last laugh won't be yours.

Drinking isn't always having a good time.
Drinking can lead to alot of potential problems.

Alcoholics, In both the recovering and practicing, can have problems being around it.
One will crave it and need it to get thru the day.
Another will desire it and be strong enough to avoid the temptations.

I was an alcoholic for years and quit for almost 9 years, Totally dry during that time.
I went to AA weekly and learned that I CAN control my urges and desires.
I can have a beer or mixed drink now and stop at one.
I don't have a desire to srink to excess, I don't have a desire to be the life of the party.

It depends on so many factors. It depends on you, you're ability to drink, you're addiction potentail and current struggles with alcohol and life in general. You shouldn't drink too much nor drink merely for pain management. There are so many factors, but if you are in a good state of mind, not currently addicted or have a history of addiction in your family, and do not drink too much, then I don't think it's all that bad. It all depends on you and how you can handle it and how it affects you. Know yourself and drink in moderation and I think it's just fine.

Like everyone here said if you don't have a problem with it, it can be fun. It is funny how the ads show people having a great time and so happy, romantic, ect. this was a trigger for me for so long because I felt if they can do it so can I. Well the sad truth is just like the tabacco companies they want us to have this vision of it to keep up the sales. People wouldn't buy it if we saw the truth of drunken deaths, filled jails, broken marriages

I read a science article about it once, and it concluded that the best effect from alcohol was at a blood concentration of about 0.5. That means something like 1-2 units of alcohol. After that several side-effects that is not pleasant or good will start to dominate a person that drinks.

It is also commonly accepted these days that 1-2 glasses of wine each day is healthy.

And I believe also from personal experience that a moderate use is something that benefit me more then to get drunk.

If I have one or two glasses of wine I feel that I have a good time. I become relaxed and a bit mellow. But if I keep drinking I start to get nausea, head-ache, I may get depressed and I may do things that I will regret the day after. So personally I want to learn to have a good time, and to not poison myself.

It used to be{fun}and friends of mine convinced me I'd be no fun or have no fun without a little alcohol included in whatever it is we were gonna do. I also learned I could not open up unless I had a drink at parties or whatever. It is a myth. My head said insert alcohol and ur cool. My mind set is still under construction here.

A lot of us had that problem of not being able to open up without a drink or two; and I'll admit that in the early years those drinks were a big help. In fact, a lot of the ease I feel in social situations today probably comes from those times. But, of course, no one but another hopeless drunk wanted to be around me at the end.

Someday, a few years down the road, drop in on one of those parties. I predict you'll have more fun watching the drunks than being one.

When I was in high school, drinking meant having a good time. As an adult alcoholic it means drawing the curtains, passing out, isolating, guilt, shame, remorse, terrible headaches, secrecy, hiding bottles, and having my life fly completely out of control because I am obsessed with escaping my problems into a bottle of wine.

That is not having a good time. That is ugly, and totally unnecessary.

Being in AA, and not drinking has allowed me to be happy, joyous and free. My joy comes from God's grace allowing me to experience all that life has to offer, without the numbing effects of alcohol.

www.aa.org is my suggestion to anyone who thinks they need help in stopping.
