James chapter 4, verses 13-17 say:

"13 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. 17 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them."

One of my hobbies is lucid dreaming, which is where you become aware during a dream that you are dreaming which allows for a lot of potential exploration and adventure. There are many techniques involved with this, but one that seems to have been successful for me in the past is an autosuggestion where I repeat to myself something along the lines of "tonight I will have a lucid dream". This might be an unusual case, but I think there are people that use mantras for more common reasons. My question is, how does one do autosuggestion or affirmation mantras without it being evil boasting?

If your conscience is bothering you, why do you suppose that is? Do you quench the Holy Spirit?

Jer. 9:23,24 (NAS)
3This is what the LORD says: “Let no wise man boast of his wisdom, nor let the mighty man boast of his might, nor a rich man boast of his riches; 24but let the one who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises [f]mercy, justice, and righteousness on the earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the LORD.

The bible is Jesus in print. If you enjoy mantras, use Jesus in print to fill your mind with the Logos. Thus pushing out the rubbish of this world. Sin always begins in the mind.

Isa55:7
Let the wicked abandon his way,

And the unrighteous person his thoughts;

2Cor. 10:5
We are destroying arguments and all arrogance raised against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ

Mantra while in modern terms can be secular has its roots in Dharmic religions. I usually avoid terms and words of other religion which discussing about my own faith. I would treat your utterance as a statement of intent. If you wish to always be able to enjoy lucid dreaming, let whichever technic you're doing now continue since it is working for you.

So long as you're not praising, attributing or requesting it from paranormal entity there is nothing wrong with it. Not everything has to be done in a spiritual sense.

Reading a fiction book or watching a TV show can be stepping into an alternate reality for a time.

Self-hypnosis seems to be going further and perhaps approximating the realm of alcoholism and drug abuse.

There can be unanticipated dangers sailing in uncharted waters. In the realm of the mind, one might open access to malicious entities.

About hypnosis, alcoholism, and drug abuse - not sure if I agree, but I'm not an expert. What makes you say this?

About uncharted waters and the realm of the mind - true, but so can exploring the world and talking to strangers, but that doesn't mean we should stay home all the time.
