Even after the transition to Intel, PCs are still ahead for gaming performance. It'll stay that way until you can get the latest graphics cards for the Mac. It also doesn't help that Apple doesn't make a Mac for the happy medium between the best iMac and the Mac Pro, which is what most gamers want in their systems.

If the prices on Macs were to come down and access to parts were more readily available like they are for the PC then I would be inclined to try a make, but because it is so propriatary that pretty much knocks me out of the running because I just can't afford it.

The other problem is with modding. Serious game and serious gamers require modding to get the best performance. Mac remains very limited in what it can run as far as hardware. Plus, while there are a few titles that run on Mac, most games don't even bother making Mac versions. I don't think you will see that change anytime soon.

Modding is just a hobby, and I don't think that Apple will ever embrace it. It's totally against what Apple is for, which is having the most possible control of their products in order to ensure stability and ease of use. Yeah, some people like to overclock to get a few more FPS, but not having that won't necessarily block Apple from being a gaming platform. If you could get the latest and greatest graphics cards and more Mac versions of games, they wouldn't need to support overclocking. Cheaper RAM would help too, Apple really rips you off on that.

Crucial Memory 1GB RAM for my mac mini $11.99
Crucial Memory 1GB RAM for my Compaq in next room $30.99
Crucial Memory 2GB RAM for top end iMac $21.99
Crucial Memory 2GB RAM HP Pavillion Elite $26.99

RAM prices between mac & pc from Crucial are competitive when upgrading...

When upgrading. Out of the box though, they rip you off more than other companies. And of course, they sell most of their products with low amounts of RAM to begin with.

When I got this mini back in 06 it was with 512 and I did have to pay an additional $50 to double it so yeah you're right about that. OTOH it is better than 2 years later and I don't forsee needing to replace or upgrade anything anytime soon. It's running great, only 1/2 the harddrive is full (and still can remove loads of preloaded stuff to make more room), still hums like when it was new. We were hoping to see a mini upgrade at the Macworld Keynote yesterday but it was basically software stuff..

Sure, for gaming PCs are great. But for anything serious?
Mac.

The virus that made short work of my PC a few weeks ago reinforces that idea.

My Mac? Running four years with no antivirus or anything like that.
No infections!

So I use my PC for gaming and the occasional training (Vista, here we come!) and the rest on the Mac.
And I couldn't be happier!

Yes, PCs can be cheaper. But the old adage is true.
"You get what you pay for."

There's nothing that the Mac can do for serious stuff better than the PC, with the possible exception of Photoshop and video editing. But serious Photoshop pros will hardware calibrate their monitors anyway, so the Mac advantage for them disappears. That leaves video editing, and the only advantage there is whether you run Final Cut Pro or not. Other big-time packages such as Avid's offerings also run on Windows. For anything else, and I mean ANYTHING else - the PC can do it just as well or better.

The virus that made short work of my PC a few weeks ago reinforces that idea.
Even Apple is admitting that Mac users need to get antivirus software now. Security by obscurity isn't something to bank on, particularly when your platform is getting more popular.

If that is the interface you like working in, sure. But PC keeps up just as well if not works better than Mac at a lot of things.
The virus that made short work of my PC a few weeks ago reinforces that idea.
It also reinforces the axiom that Windows based machines are made for people who know how to use a computer.
My Mac? Running four years with no antivirus or anything like that.
No infections!
My PC, running for 3 years now. Virus protection scans once a day while I'm asleep, doesn't lag my machine, and I've not had a single virus in that time. Nor have I had one on my other machine in 4 years. If you're getting viruses, the problem lies between the chair and the keyboard. Frankly, the whole virus argument that Mac fanboys use is getting a little old and shows how desperate they are to bash Windows. Anyone with a brain can keep from getting a virus. Oh, and the only reason that Mac doesn't see more viruses developed for it is because it holds a very small part of the market share. I believe it was quoted at 8% in 2008.
So I use my PC for gaming and the occasional training (Vista, here we come!) and the rest on the Mac.
And I couldn't be happier!
I run XP on this machine and Vista on 2 others. My laptop and my studio. If I didn't believe Vista was the best choice for my rig, it certainly wouldn't be the brain of my studio. Unfortunately, there is a lot of stigma fueled by a buggy release and Mac fans so people are scared to even attempt to try Vista. I've had no problems with it what-so-ever. I like it quite a bit. Looking even more forward to giving Windows 7 a try which I'm hearing is putting both XP and Vista to shame, which makes me very hopeful.
Yes, PCs can be cheaper. But the old adage is true.
"You get what you pay for."
If you prefer Mac, that is fine. But head to head, it's pretty much the same when it comes to usage. However, Mac has turned into a pop culture fad of elitists. There is also an old adage about shining a turd... I think it fits the description here. (Obligatory Fanboy comeback)

Used bold...in the middle of installing Vista and am taking a shortcut!

Besides, Macs come loaded with an array or software that'd cost you a pretty penny for the PC. What does a PC come with?
Calculator.
(Mac fanboi line...hee hee)
