My first thought when I read your description of the middle school class is that he was trying to explain catechism to you. Luther's Small Catechism is series of questions and answers, through which children are taught Lutheran doctrines. The middle school class, if it's like our church's confirmation class, is a two-year once-weekly class where they explore Christian history and doctrine, and learn the questions and answers of the Small Catechism.
The new member classes are confirmation for adults. You can certainly read and study the Catechism (I do so regularly myself), but you probably won't have two-year class on it.
