My first thought when I read your description of the middle school class is that he was trying to explain catechism to you. Luther's Small Catechism is series of questions and answers, through which children are taught Lutheran doctrines. The middle school class, if it's like our church's confirmation class, is a two-year once-weekly class where they explore Christian history and doctrine, and learn the questions and answers of the Small Catechism.

The new member classes are confirmation for adults. You can certainly read and study the Catechism (I do so regularly myself), but you probably won't have two-year class on it.

I think that's probably what your pastor was saying...as an adult, you won't have to go through such a long, methodical process that the middle schoolers do. They get tested on what they've learned and some of these testings are orally in front of the congregation.

Usually, the adult inquirer's type of class (I went through it at my church even though I grew up Lutheran) lasts a couple months and you go through the catechism by using the Bible. Like others said, at the end, you are asked if you would like to join the congregation or not.

thank you guys! it means a lot. i'm so lost what with living in a new place in a new climate zone and all that... it's just nice to be able to talk to people every once in a while.
