LOVE COMMANDED!!

a. #1 = Love God + #2 = Love Neighbor AS SELF...the "BIG 2" IN ORDER!
...Luke 10: 25-29: Matthew 22: 37-40; Mark 12:30
b. Love "ONE ANOTHER" (believers) as I have loved you
...John 13:34-35; John 15; 1 John 4
c. Love Enemies..Sermon on the Mount...the HARD ONE...Matthew 5: 43-48
d. ABIDE in God's Love..1 John; John 15
e. If you Love me, FOLLOW/ (serve) me...Matthew 16: 24-27; Luke 14:25-33; John 12:26
f. If you Love me, OBEY, TRUST etc...and ...Get the "good news" out!..Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15

The GOLDEN RULE "to treat others as I want to be treated" (Matt. 7:12)...good MAN-to-MAN ADVICE...not a COMMAND!

Matthew 7:12 (all NASB)
“In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you,
for this IS (summarizes?) the (Mosaic) Law and the (OT) Prophets.

#1: LOVE GOD

Matthew 22:37-40
And He (Jesus) said to him (lawyer) ,
A. “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
This is the great and foremost commandment.
B The second is like it,
‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
On these two commandments DEPEND (derive?) the whole (Mosiac) Law and the (OT) Prophets.”

Jesus the God-Man FULFILLED the (Mosiac) Law and the (OT)

Matthew 5:17
“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets;
I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.

Luke 24:44
Now He said to them,
“These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you,
that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”

#2: LOVE NEIGHBOR as SELF

Luke 10:25-37...extracts: Parable of the Good Samaritan
And a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying,
“Teacher, what shall I (me, MYSELF) DO to INHERIT eternal life?”...
29 But wishing to justify himself, he (lawyer( said to Jesus, “And who is my NEIGHBOR?”
30 Jesus replied and said...("Parable of the The Good Samaritan")
36 Which of these three do you think PROVED to be a NEIGHBOR to the man who fell into the robbers’ hands?”
37 And he said, “The one who showed MERCY (Love!) toward him.”
Then Jesus said to him, (YOU) “Go and do the same.”

Where are the words "love" or "works"?
It is a LESSON on how Man should treat Man...even a stranger.
The lawyer wrongly thought he had to DO something to INHERIT God's Grace.

Matthew 19: 16-26...Jesus encounters The Rich Young Ruler's heart (SEE ALSO: Mark 10:17 etc; Luke 18:18 )
16 And someone (The Rich Young Ruler) came to Him (Jesus) and said,
“Teacher, what GOOD THING (works) shall I (myself) DO that I may OBTAIN (inherit) "eternal (spiritual life"?”
17And He said to him,
“Why are you asking Me about WHAT is good? There is only One WHO is good;
but if YOU wish to enter into (eternal SPIRITUAL) life", keep the (10?) commandments.”
Then he said to Him, “Which ones?”
And Jesus said, (#1 is LOVE GOD...SEE: Deuteronomy 6:5 ; Luke 10:27)
“You shall not commit murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness;
Honor your father and mother; and You shall LOVE your NEIGHBOR as yourself.”
The young man said to Him, “All these things I have KEPT; (the Mosaic Law) what am I still lacking?”
21 Jesus said to him,
“If you wish to be COMPLETE (in works), (YOU) go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and YOU will have treasure in heaven; and COME, FOLLOW Me.”

But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.

And Jesus said to His DISCIPLES,
“Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.
Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel (rope?) to go through the eye of a needle,
than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” (Choose WHICH to serve: God or wealth...Matthew 6:24)
When the disciples heard this, they were very astonished and said,
Then who can be SAVED?” (from death unto "eternal SPIRITUAL life")
And looking at them Jesus said to them,
“With people (man's works) this is impossible,
but with God all things are possible.”

(God draws/calls and offers Grace through the gift of Spirit-led FAITH / BELIEF)

#2b: SELF

Genesis 1:26
Then God (plural=elohim) said,
“Let Us make man in Our (SPIRITUAL) image,
according to Our (CHARACTER) likeness

Genesis 5:2
He created them male and female, and
He blessed them and
named them Man (MANKIND) in the day when they were created.

Psalm 139:14...I will give thanks to You,
for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Wonderful are Your works,
And my soul knows it very well.

Psalm 139:13...For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb.

Ephesians 4:16
from whom the whole body,
being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies,
according to the proper working of each individual part,
causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.

Ephesians 5
28 So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; 29 for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, 30 because we are members of His body.

#3: Love "ONE ANOTHER" (believers) as I have loved you

John 13:34-35.."one another" (Greek = allelon) = mutual, reciprocal, beneficial love among believers
A new commandment I give to you, that
you love "one another", even as I have loved you,
that you also love "one another".
By this all men will know that you are My disciples,(followers, pupils)
if you have love for "one another".”

John 15:12,17 [Disciples’ Relation to Each Other]
“This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you....
This I command you, that you love one another.

Romans 12:10
Be devoted to one another in brotherly love;
give preference to one another in honor;

Romans 13:8
Owe nothing to anyone except to love "one another";
for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.

Galatians 5:13
For you were called to freedom, brethren;
only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh,
but through love serve "one another".

Ephesians 4:2
with all humility and gentleness, with patience,
showing tolerance for "one another" in love,

#4: LOVE ENEMIES

Matthew 5:43-48...Jesus' Sermon on the Mount to crowds
43 “You have heard that it was said,
‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’
44 But I say to you,
love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven;(believers)
for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and
sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
47 If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?
48 Therefore you are to be (TRY to be!) perfect (mature),
as your (EXAMPLE: your) heavenly Father is perfect.(holy and omnibenevolent)

2. How are Mosaic "Big 10" laws derived from the "Big 2"?

Jesus said that all of the Law and the Prophets hang on the greatest two commands, so they are all examples for how to correctly obey those two, not just the Ten Commandments, through the first five of the Ten Commandments are instructions for how to love our creators while the last five are instructions for how to love our neighbors.

QUESTIONS:
1. What are the 3 Greek words for "love" and their definitions?

There are actually four...

  • Agápe (ἀγάπη agápē[1]) means "love: esp. charity; the love of God for man and of man for God."[2] Agape is used in ancient texts to denote feelings for one's children and the feelings for a spouse, and it was also used to refer to a love feast.[3] Agape is used by Christians to express the unconditional love of God for his children.[4]This type of love was further explained by Thomas Aquinas as "to will the good of another."[5]
  • Éros (ἔρως érōs) means "love, mostly of the sexual passion."[6] The Modern Greek word "erotas" means "intimate love." Plato refined his own definition: Although eros is initially felt for a person, with contemplation it becomes an appreciation of the beauty within that person, or even becomes appreciation of beauty itself. Plato does not talk of physical attraction as a necessary part of love, hence the use of the word platonic to mean, "without physical attraction." In the Symposium, the most famous ancient work on the subject, Plato has Socrates argue that eros helps the soul recall knowledge of beauty, and contributes to an understanding of spiritual truth, the ideal "Form" of youthful beauty that leads us humans to feel erotic desire – thus suggesting that even that sensually based love aspires to the non-corporeal, spiritual plane of existence; that is, finding its truth, just like finding any truth, leads to transcendence.[7] Lovers and philosophers are all inspired to seek truth through the means of eros.
  • Philia (φιλία philía) means "affectionate regard, friendship," usually "between equals."[8] It is a dispassionate virtuous love, a concept developed by Aristotle.[9]In his best-known work on ethics, Nicomachean Ethics, philia is expressed variously as loyalty to friends (specifically, "brotherly love"), family, and community, and requires virtue, equality, and familiarity. Furthermore, in the same text philos denotes a general type of love, used for love between family, between friends, a desire or enjoyment of an activity, as well as between lovers.
  • Storge (στοργή storgē) means "love, affection" and "especially of parents and children"[10] It is the common or natural empathy, like that felt by parents for offspring.[11] Rarely used in ancient works, and then almost exclusively as a descriptor of relationships within the family. It is also known to express mere acceptance or putting up with situations, as in "loving" the tyrant. This is also used when referencing the love for ones country or a favorite sports team.

2. How are Mosaic "Big 10" laws derived from the "Big 2"?

The first four are about Loving God, the last six, about loving your neighbor as, and yourself...

3. How do YOU "LOVE GOD"?

How do I love in general...? I "care"... and it comes from the heart and I show it with actions, and I do not give up on it...

4. How did Jesus' completed missions demonstrate His LOVE?

He cared about us, about everything and showed it and demonstrated it and never gave up on it (caring) although under intense pressure to give up on it (caring)...

Like your post a lot, thanks for it... Excellent job!

God Bless!

FYI good friend: the Hebrew word "dabar", translated "commandment", is translated my no less then 85 different words in the KJV(see the problem). It means: a word given in any capacity.

The first 'dabar' is, "I am the Lord your God" which is not a "commandment" but a declaration of fact.

The Decalogue are actually two sets of five(two tablets). The first five toward God and the second five toward man.

The first "dabar" is a declaration of fact. The sixth one is written as a command, "Honor your mother and father".

The rest are all in the future tense meaning who and what we are to be IN HIS LOVE which is awesome! Not "commandments"! They're are a statement of how we recognize each other, how we function in life. It is BEAUTIFUL!

Do you murder? Do you covet(it's ok to lie )? Of course not! God PROCLAMED you correctly in His Decalogue! Me too!

In the NT Greek when Jesus quoted this, He used the subjunctive(maybe yes, maybe no) mood and not the imperative(command!). He said, "No you might not be murdering." He did not say, "do not murder!"

In the NT we have the word entolE, instead of dabar, it means: in-destiny. Not that your seeking it but, that you are there 'in-destiny' because God has already proclaimed us! Isn't it just beautiful!

I wish I could tell the whole world this! Wait--I just did!

A pet peeve of mine is the translators leaving off the "and" at the beginning of each of those commands. In the Hebrew text both start with the same word: "v'ahavta." "And you shall love ..." That means you really should be looking at the text to find out what the "and" is referring to.

BTW - the "first and foremost command" got an upgrade:

John 13:34
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

After all, would you want to be "loved" by someone who "loved themselves" to the point of being self destructive or even suicidal?

I love puppies. I love ice cream. I love women's bodies.
I love my fishing buddy. I love the Saints.
I love God. I love Jesus. I love the Spirit.

See the problem??
If there are different words in Greek and only one English word then, yes there is a problem:

So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love(agapaO) Me more than these?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love(phileO) You " He said to him, "Tend My lambs." He said to him again a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love(agapaO) Me?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love(phileO) You." He said to him, "Shepherd My sheep." He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love(phileO) Me?" Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, "Do you love(phileO) Me?" And he said to Him, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I love(phileO)You " Jesus said to him, "Tend My sheep. John 21:15-17 NASB

Also, he asked Peter if he loved him (Jesus) more than these (others) and Peter did not exactly answer the question, which might have also been why Jesus kept pressing the issue (maybe?)...

Or because Peter, this is after the cross, rejected Him 3 times prior.

1. What are the 3 Greek words for "love" and their definitions?
Actually there are 4: Agape, Storge, Phileo and Eros.

In reverse order:

Eros = romantic and sexual love.
Phileo = family and friendship love
Storge = a long term sense of belonging together
Agape = unconditional love. Unlike the others, it has no need to be reciprocated for its long term stability.

Of course there are 4 Hebrew words as well: Ahavah, Dod, Racham, and Chashak.

Ahavah = familial, friendship and devotion. It sometimes implies sexual love as well
Dod = romantic and sexual love, almost an exact equivalent of Eros.
Racham = sometimes rendered love, but usually rendered compassion or mercy.
Chashak = used in scripture only 4 times and means to cling or be bound together.

I was in a play once that actually noted the difference between agape and phileo:

J: Peter, Do you love me?
P: Yes Lord, I am fond of you.
J: Feed my lambs. But Peter do you LOVE me?
P: Lord, you know that I like you very much.
J: Feed my sheep. So do you LIKE me Peter?
P: Lord, you know my heart better than I do, You know my love.

Most Christians I know draw the line at #3.
They are very kind and loving to each other but not their enemies.
Look on any social media content where the political paradigms are discussed. Look at comments of Christians. The vast majority will refer to the other side as idiots, morons, stupid, jerks, hypocrites, ect.
For them, folks on the other side of the field are their enemies and they show no mercy.
Jesus said "what good is it if you love only those who love you? Don't even the pagans do that?"

I might suggest that to test oneself look no further than your feelings/thoughts/words towards those who oppose you.[/QUOTE]
