Personally I find it even more compelling if the names of the week were given after Christ (meaning most people understood the significance of Sabbath), but I do understand what you're looking for.

Unfortunately, not one of us here could give you first-hand knowledge about the origins of language, and anyone that tries is on a slippery slope of bearing false witness.

Wikipedia says language started over 50,000 years ago. I guess Wikipedia was there?

One website had some archeological writings on stone, but they couldn't accurately date the stone.

It's a great question and I hope you'll keep us posted on what you find out!

Visionary--I have a book (wish I could find it now), called "Our Amazing Week" and it has the word SABBATH being used as the 7th day word since time in memorial--I mean WAY back in time and in many different languages and countries. I'll keep looking for it though.

I sure don't recall the name. But the time line was researched by a baptist pastor. I have looked all over my house for this book. I'm really upset that I cannot find it. I have a few more places where it might be. I sure hope it's in one of them.

I am starting to come across the historical records but will have to get more references on these.

The first century historian, Flavius Josephus, gives us great insight as to what took place on the Sabbath, not only in Jerusalem, but, in all of the Roman empire.: .....the multitude of mankind itself have had a great inclination of a long time to follow our religious observances; for there is not any city of the Grecians, nor any of the barbarians, nor any nation whatsoever, whither our custom of resting on the seventh day hath not come.....
Philo, a first century historian of Alexandria Egypt, reports the same findings: "And in short, it is very nearly an universal rule, from the rising of the sun to its extreme west, that every country, and nation, and city, is alienated from the laws and customs of foreign nations and states, and that they think that they are adding to the estimation in which they hold their own laws by despising those in use among other nations. But this is not the case with our laws which Moses has given to us; for they lead after them the inhabitants of continents, and islands, the eastern nations and the western, Europe and Asia, in short, the whole inhabited world from one extremity to the other. For what man is there who does not honour that sacred seventh day, ranting in consequence a relief and relaxation from labour, for himself and for all those who are near to him, and that not to free men only, but also to slaves, and even to beast of burden.

Philo (20 BCE - 50 CE), known also as Philo of Alexandria (gr. Φίλων ὁ Ἀλεξανδρεύ&#962, Philo Judaeus, Philo Judaeus of Alexandria, Yedidia, and Philo the Jew was a Hellenistic Jewish philosopher born in Alexandria, Egypt.

Even though he made the statement about it being all over the place, he could also been referencing the influence of Jews upon the countries and not about the people of the different nations who adopted more than that name for that day of the week.

Oh thank God--I finally found, "Our Amazing Week". It was published by the Quiet Hour, copyrighted 2000. The chart it self was compiled by William Mead Jones, a 7th Day Baptist minister.

I tried to scan some pages to post here, but I don't have a good ORC program and those ancient scripts totally confused my computer--lol.

Maybe you can write to the QH and see if they have copies on hand. It's pretty amazing how this man compiled all the languages of the world, both modern and ancient who still refer to the 7th day of the as 'sabbath'.

Excerpt-- The table above includes some of the oldest languages known to man. One of these, the Babylonian language, was in use hundreds of years before the Hebrew race was founded by Abraham. That language designated the seventh day of the week as "sa-ba-tu," meaning rest day -- another indisputable proof that the Bible "Sabbath" was not, and is not, exclusively Jewish.

No--I'm sorry to say that the book doesn't go into that area. But one thing I noticed was very interesting.

The word 'week' in the OT, literally means 'seven'. "shabuwa". So even centuries before Sinai, the ancients understood the 7 day cycle of the 'week'.

Where does it come from?

The year comes from one full revolution of the earth around the sun.

The month comes from one full revolution of the moon around the earth.

The day comes from one full revolution of the earth on its own axis.

These are all naturally occurring events. Now explain to me where the weekly cycle comes from? Only one answer the Creation week.

I found an intersting article on line. I cannot vouch for it's validity, but is is very interesting. Here is an excerpt...

The Mystery of New Zealand's Maoris
There is evidence among the Maori and people of eastern Polynesia that the sun was deified as Tane and that Ra, the sun god, was the tutelary god of Borabora. The Maoris, also, made use of ancient solar observatories. "At Kerikeri, in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, there is a miniature Stonehenge, the blocks standing about 7 feet out of the ground; and near Atiamuri, north of Taupo, there are other great monumental blocks -- some fifty of these still standing erect" (Maori Symbolism, p.137).
Interestingly, ancient Maori traditions relate that since antiquity the Maoris have observed ceremonial and dietary laws very similar to those of the ancient Hebrews. They even kept the seventh day "Sabbath" as a day of rest! Also, every 7 times 7 years -- or 49 years -- they observed a Jubilee Year similar to that of the ancient Hebrews." These similarities simply cannot be explained away as "mere coincidence"! The Maoris, like the Hebrews, even had a "sacred month" given over to Harvest thanksgiving, corresponding to the Hebrew month of Tishri and the Festival of Tabernacles.
How can these fascinating facts be explained? Such similarities must be more than mere coincidence. Like the Yuchi Indians of North America, the Maoris, at some very early stage of history, must have come in contact with ancient Hebrew mariners, roaming the seven seas, who taught them Hebrew customs and left behind signs of Hebraic influence!
How was this contact achieved? Was the ancient world covered by a global cultural continuity, indicating a globe-girdling civilization?
