I recently converted to Orthodox Christianity, and I know that our canon includes the deuterocanonical books. I wanted to know if the Catholic canon is the same as ours, because a friend from school who's Catholic said he thinks it's slightly different, and I'm probably going to buy a Catholic Bible.

Is it all the same, or are there any differences? And any recommendations on what version to buy would help too.

I would recommend the "Ignatius Bible" which is a particular publication of the RSV translation. That or the Oxford Annotated Edition of the Revised Standard Version (RSV) with the "apocrypha."

As for any differences in accepted books, the advice given is probably right, but as I'm not familiar with the Orthodox "canon" (if there is one), I cannot assist there.

Well, there probably will be an official canon soon if there isn't one already. There's a Bible coming out called the Orthodox Study Bible; there's an OSB out now, but all it has really is the New Testament and Psalms. This one will have the Old Testament and the New Testament, with of course the deuterocanon included within the Old Testament.

But it's coming out around Pascha...

My friend has the Oxford Study Bible (NRSV) and it has both the Catholic and the Orthodox deuterocanon included. The only problems I've heard with the NRSV were its lack of poetic language and its use of gender-inclusive language. Overall, it seems like a very good, acurate translation.

I want a new Bible too. I have an NASB, but it doesn't have footnotes or cross references. Not being a scholar of the Bible, I really don't care about which one it is as long as it has all of the books and has footnotes and cross references.

Since our readings are from the NAB (or is it NSV?) I think that would be a wise choice, however.

For me, an accurate translation doesn't matter... the New Jerusalem bible reads much different than th NSV but I like it just the same too.

I think with any Bible a good commentary is necessary so you can understand for whom it was written, when it was written and why it was written... then it can put your reading into context so, imo, the need for a strict translation is neither here nor there if you have the commentary.
