Now I have always believed both from my upbringing and independent Bible study that when you die your body remains in the ground and stays there until Jesus comes back.

There were the exceptions like Moses and Jesus. There were obviously those situations like Lazarus, Jairu's daughter, Elijah and the Shulammitte woman's son, Eutychus where those who died were resurrected as well.

This week I listened to the radio to hear someone talking about the little girl, who tragically died after being hit by that tree in her school playground, resting safely in heaven with Jesus now. What do we mean when we say that? How from your studies do you understand what happens to us until Christ comes back to this earth? Just curious as to how others think on this issue.

Well, I know that we cannot in a post or two or three cover a college level course in Escathology, and no such question can be answered logically and satisfactorily in a few sentences. But I believe that when a Christian dies He goes immediately into the presence of the Lord. Does this mean Heaven? No I don't think so. I think it is a place called paradise, which is not Heaven, itself. Just as I believe the unsaved do not go immediately to a place called hell but rather to a place called hades where they await the Great White Throne Judgement from whence they enter into hell.

For the record, I believe when a person dies his body returns to the ground and the breath of life which made man a living soul returns to God. I believe that when God returns those who have died in him and are saved will be raised from the dead but their bodies will receive another breath of life which effectively changes the body from being mortal to being immortal.

Subsequently I believe the unrighteous who have died will be ressurrected when Christ returns to establish the New Jersualem on earth and perish for eternity after the great battle.

For me this is still a study in progress but am interested in how one concludes that people or living souls go to heaven.

Please take this in the spirit of love that is posted and understand that I only wish to share in the beliefs of others rather than be involved in a theological debate as to who is right or wrong about life after death.

Blessings

My beliefs differ to those of Gerry, I believe that when a person dies there body becomes of no use anymore and although I think burial/cremation/whatever you want to do is nice for the people mourning that death that it is really quite irrelevant. I believe that when you die you will be judged by God and depending on your beliefs and whether you have repented your sins you will either be sent to Heaven or Hell. Thise who are sent to Heaven will have eternal paradise in the presence of God, and those sent to Hell will have to suffer eternal damnation in the complete absence of God.

As a side note, I believe that you will be able to 'recognise' people in the after life, but not because of their physical appearance but because of their personality and the likes.

My conclusions come from the following text

1 Cor 15:42-44
So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.

1 Cor 15:51-54
Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed-- in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true:
