"Trinity was a controversy in the 3rd century. Emperor Constantine called a meeting of his Church he had empowered of the opposing factions at Nicaea in 325 ad, and to become knowon as he Nicene Creed-the first man mande creed by a man made church. This added more confusion. If we embrace Trinity, 3 persons in the Godhead--we are following the Latin apostate church."

This was my favorite part, where he ignores the Church Fathers pre-325.

And I'll be sure to stay clear of the Latin apostate church.

Ufonium2, I read small-town Nebraska newspapers all day long at my job. At first I used to get upset when I read "From the Pastor's Pen" and other such columns, but now I just shake my head and laugh. Then I get sad that people actually listen to these guys. Then I remember that It's rural Nebraska, and there's a few hundred cows for every person, so not too many people are reading it.

It is entertaining, though!

Let's be careful...

Although we talk among ourselves others are watching and reading too. Let us always point out error in a loving way. Let us hold dear our Orthodox beliefs and stand ready to guard them, but let us never appear to be full of pride and boastful with the Truth for it is then that we will fall as the Truth becomes to us our own private knowledge.

As a monk once said when asked what he did when he saw another sinning..."When I see another sin I think, woe is ME...for I know it will soon be me that sins as well"

Just some thoughts for us all to ponder.

You have the worst job in the world! I now live hundreds of miles away from the town that spawned this article, but I keep a subscription to that paper because my friends get a kick out of it and it reminds me why I went to college

This guy is the only one I've ever seen attack the Catholic or Orthodox Churches in that particular paper, probably because there are nothing but Protestants in that town. So, generally it's pastors from the fringes attacking mainline Protestants on issues like the Trinity and OSAS.

In the area there are pastors with actual divinity degrees and churches that belong to mainline denominations, but they are basically silent. I guess they've got better things to do than write a weekly column entitled "Perverted Gospel" (the title of the OP) or my personal favorite: "Hell is hot. Get saved."

He also forgot the Apostle's Creed predates the Nicene Creed, so actually, it was the second Creed

Ahhh, I love those titles. Perverted Gospel especially.

This is unrelated, but my Stepfather grew up in McCook and his family went to a Restorationist movement church. Apparently a new pastor decided it would be nice to have a couple of candles going during the service. Half the congregation seemed to think that somehow the Pontiff had established a beach-head in their midst and they packed up and started a new church (I think right across the street).

Didn't Jesus quote the septuigant, anyway? That would make Him an Aramaic speaking, Greek-quoting Hebrew.
Furthermore, since it took over 200 years for the New Testament canon to be codified, the Church couldn't have been completely corrupt by then, right?
The saddest part about these types of writers is that they're almost as misguided in their opinions as I am, except theirs leads people to form new "church" dictrines, while mine are just ignorant opinions. Hmmmm.

The scary thing about the original post is, the people who write and teach this stuff actually believe every word of it. I wonder what would happen if we could actually get them to sit down and read a few history books? Studying church history and the Apostolic Fathers was one of the things that led me to Orthodoxy in the first place.

They believe it sincerely, and they also believe that it is necessary to "warn" everyone else. Their intentions are honorable, but that doesn't mitigate the effects of the falsehood they spread. Some of them would heed the truth if they only knew it, and some wouldn't. That some of them would makes it worthwhile to get the information out there!

This article isn't reflective of Anabaptist beliefs, though. Your typical "Anabaptist" (Baptist, Assembly of God, Calvary Chapel, etc) strongly believe in the Trinity. As someone said, this sounds like Oneness Pentecostal, or some other non-trinitarian sect. Maybe even Jehovah's Witness.

And technically, modern Baptists aren't really Anabaptists. The only true Anabaptists today are Mennonites and related groups, and they are, of course, quite Trinitarian.

I generally use "anabaptist" to refer to those who reject infant baptism, and most of the community is either Baptist or CoG, Holiness, Pentecostal or some odd combination of those words. (The best being the infamous Trinity United Pentecostal Church, funny because the UPC is non-Trinitarian.)

In the case of this town we could use your definition since there is a large Mennonite population (old-school Mennonites too, dress like the Amish and don't have A/C or radios in their black cars.) I don't know the guy who wrote the original article, but I'd say Oneness Pentecostal is a good guess.

What gets me is that people can live their whole lives and never realize they are the minority. I mean, there are maybe 30 Catholics in that whole county, and when I'm in town the Orthodox population swells to 1. So, you can refer to the "Latin apostate church" or the Greek perversion of the Bible and nobody is going to argue with you there. Nevermind that worldwide the vast majority of Christianity belongs to one of those two churches. Of course, this guy would probably also be shocked to learn that 98% of Christianity (a guess, but probably a good one) believes in the Trinity.

The author's address was listed below the article. I'm thinking of sending him a Church history book, but it would need to be something with "Orthodox" nowhere in the the title, lest he throw it away without opening it. Any suggestions?

This is what happened at Bob Jones University when they hired an Orthodox Priest to serve as a History Professor. He taught them Church History and a whole crop of young Orthodox Seminarians came from Bob Jones! (They converted to Orthodoxy when they learned the truth. It was the only honest thing to do.)

The BJU story is fascinating! I teach at an Evangelical high school, and for some subjects, we use Bob Jones textbooks. They are anti-Catholic to the max. They would also be anti-Orthodox, if they knew anything about Orthodoxy. I have been trying to get the school to let me teach a class in church history... now I think I will really pester them to let me teach such a class! In fact, it was a class in church history, at their Bible college, taught by one of their pastors, that helped me along my way to Orthodoxy! The prof had zero enthusiasm for Orthodoxy, which he regards as an exotic branch of the Catholic Church, yet even the little he said intrigued me. Teach more church history and we will have more converts to Orthodoxy!
