Learning Hebrew?

The very very BEST way to learn Hebrew is to learn to speak Modern Israeli Hebrew. There are lots of books, tapes and resources out in the market that you can find in your local bookstore.

*WARNING!* Don't get trapped into simply learning how to read and comprehend Hebrew! If you aren't speaking it, you aren't learning it. It simply will not stick or you will remain, at best, at a very basic level. The speaking part is the most important part, because you are forced to internalize the language when you speak it. Besides it's SO MUCH more fun learning by speaking!!!

Go to Israel!! That's the best way...Attend an immersion "Ulpan" or volunteer at a Kibbutz. The fastest way to learn Hebrew is to immerse yourself in Hebrew.

If you are a purist, I know that there is an immersion "Ulpan" in Jerusalem that specializes in teaching folks how to speak 'Ivrit Tenachit (Biblical Hebrew). I took it and absolutely recommend it to anyone!! My seminary friends all forgot their Hebrew or their reading comprehension is like at a first grade level, but I just keep advancing the more I read! (And it's sticking...I'm not losing it!)

They also have tapes and resources they can send you to complement those Modern Hebrew resources you'll find in the bookstores. They do the same method for Koine Greek, by the way (Aramit is on its way)...
